Cool man. Not sure if this is your cup of tea, but might I suggest some Bela Fleck and the Flecktones? They're a great live band. I'll be seeing them two blocks from my apartment on Dec. 5.

Ah the banjo: The thinking man's guitar.

I still have my grandfather's banjo somewhere. Pretty neat, I really loved it when I was little

I will second Bela Fleck, but his work with the Flecktones is kinda weird. I would also suggest certain songs from Sufjan Stevens (For the Widows in Paradise is awesome!). I have always wanted to pick up banjo given that I have played guitar for 10 years now, but money has always been an issue with me. Now that I am done with college it seems more realistic. Anyway, good luck with your new instrument!

Awesome. I love bluegrass. My GF bought me a mandolin for christmas a couple years ago. I got as far as playing things like Yankee Doodle, and Drunken Sailor before I put it down. It's hard to learn an instrument on your own. The instructional book I was using (Mel Bay's) had too many duets, and I kinda got stuck.

I should pick it up again. But it's hard to find the time in between all the video games heh. I'd pretty much be starting from scratch too, don't even have callouses on my fingers anymore.

Bela Fleck, is of course a god on the banjo. So don't expect to start playing Flecktones tunes right away. I bet he's got a good instructional DVD out though.

I have a 4 string tenor banjo, it is a bit different than the 5 string bluegrass variety. it is used more for celtic and traditional irish music and stuff like that, or i could be used as a plectrum banjo. I have always liked banjos, and i found mine while looking for games at a pawn shop. I got it for $100. I couldn't pass it up at that price. I have a couple books coming, but it is very hard to find stuff for a tenor or plectrum banjo, most instructional stuff is geared towards the 5 string, so that might end up being an issue.

I'm with you on that I listen to all types of "nontraditional" music, and quirky music within genres
