Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I bought X-COM: UFO Defense on Steam last week and after starting a game I saw how much I would have to learn in order to play this game. About ten years ago I would have loved to dig deep into the system and develop an effective strategy to combat the aliens and maintain my funding, but that was ten years ago. I played around for about 5 minutes, turned the game off, and watched some TV.Key-Glyph wrote:I simply can't put the effort into learning something new or complicated on some days. And this can happen with non-new games, too, if they require a lot of concentration, skill, or quick reflexes; I'll be too mentally fried to stay on top of the gameplay and my performance will actually suffer for it.

X-Com isn't even that complicated! You just need to read the manual. I wonder if the lack of a paper manual has anything to do with your apathy. I have found that my iPad helps with that, since I can read manuals like a book instead of sitting at a computer screen.
As for not having the stamina to play long games, I can understand. I often feel the same way. I thought it was just a fact of being older. However, earlier this year, I completed the longest game I have ever played in my life, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The game was Legend of Dragoon for the PlayStation. The game took 40 hours of play to complete. I didn't have a single moment of regret while playing.
The lesson I learned is that, games I truly enjoy will be played regardless of complexity or length. If I am finding that I hesitate to play a certain game, it's probably due to feeling obligated to play it for reasons other than pure enjoyment.

Ah, see, even though I have more trouble mustering the energy to start particularly involved games in my old age sometimes -- I'm also 27Retrogamer0001 wrote:I think it's pretty common to struggle with playing a game (especially an RPG) for four, six, eight hours at a time...
To be fair, though, I guess I do take breaks. I'll pause and wander off to wash some dishes or something, then wander back. But I do think that's more out of an awareness of how unproductive I'm being than anything else. As long as I get something done I can't feel too bad about having a "me" day, right? Yeah, we'll go with that.
Being an adult. You're finally your own boss, but now you've got all these other responsibilities and junk.

Crap... this thread reminded me that I've been slacking on Half-Life. I'm right at the end and really need to finish it. I absolutely love this game, so it's not like it's a "chore" for me to play; I really do want to finish it.
What boggles my mind is that I had no issue rocking through Pokemon and Super Godzilla. Maybe it's because I've been playing both on handhelds (Super Godzilla emulated on PSP)? Maybe taking TV time away from the kid, putting the disc in the Dreamcast, changing the channel, and hooking up the controller is too much of a chore.... Maybe I'm just too lazy

Re: Ever feel tired of gaming?
I often do. It seems like lately I've been going almost purely collector rather than gamer. I consider selling my collection from time to time, but I feel as though I'll regret it later. I consider selling the software and just keeping the flash carts, but I really do like having the carts/cds/dvds as well, the display (if I ever got around to DOING it) is half the fun.
I think part of my complaint is that my house feels small lately -- it's kinda ripped up from an upstairs renovation I'm doing, and that's like half my house that I can't use, so it just feels overwhelming. I need to take some of the time in the end of next month when I have a couple weeks off to finally finish painting, then get the flooring installed so I can move stuff back up. That should hopefully help.
I'll probably STILL just be a collector at that point, buuuuut at least it'll be displayed well again

Re: Ever feel tired of gaming?
Welcome to the Family! As for getting tired of gaming, I have never been tired of gaming in general. I just get tired of certain genres, I usually just start playing my Shmups when that happens because I cannot get enough of shmups! Especially Ikaruga on GC
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)
Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping!

Re: Ever feel tired of gaming?
I'll come out and confess on this topic I have been playing COD for the 5 past years straight and competitively. Then it kind of dawned upon me that I was getting burned out to the point that my stress levels were too much. So about 3 months ago I played my last COD with my good friends and just stopped altogether.
TBH I never felt better in my life my stress levels are better I get to play more RPG's like Fallout, Skyrim, and a bunch of action adventure titles like Kingdom of Amular and just having a blast. And better yet I was able to enjoy my Saturn and PS2 games more.
What made me tired of gaming on COD aside from the usual rehash was that I didn't have that urge anymore to play at a high level and like an athelete past his or her prime felt that I better things to do. But I can tell you my last COD BLOPS II game in ground war calling 2 swarms and getting around 60+kills and 3 to 5 deaths is the only way to go out in style
