Actually that reminds me...not a fan of Metal Gear or any stealth games. I'm more of a type that runs out guns blazing lol. Some games I can sneak around but I fail hard at them.

Metal Gear is mostly stealth in name only. The most common way to handle something in those games is using a gun to the face. Though, you can play through them without killing a single person. But that's for people who are hardcore MG players.

That is why I was always a larger fan of the original set of Splinter Cell Games and the Thief franchise, they had a major focus on stealth. I really enjoy those games. I for the life of me can't play a Metal Gear Solid game. I keep trying and keep failing.Cronozilla wrote:Metal Gear is mostly stealth in name only. I'll vouch for that Wii thread over on RHDN. I participated in it, after all.
And honestly, those are just the games that flew under the radar. There are some absolutely amazing first-party titles for the system. Mario Galaxy is one, but it's certainly not the only one, with two excellent Zelda titles, Metroid Prime 3 (and Trilogy if you were lucky enough to snag it), a couple of excellent Kirby platformers, a DKC game that I've heard is great, and so many more. It was flooded with crap, but there's still tons of stuff that's worth experiencing on there.
Heck, other than the characterization, I'll even vouch for Other M.

The beauty of the Metal Gear Solid games is that you can go through the entirety of every game without killing a single person. There are rewards in most of the games upon doing this, so it is certainly possible.
Or you can go through like a maniac shooting, stabbing, choking, and blowing up every living thing in sight. It's actually way easier to do this than it is to be stealthy. These games are just as accessible to fans of gung-ho action.
You can play them however you want.

I just don't like stealth games at all. Its one 'genre' I can't stand. I don't mind being sneaky on certain parts but otherwise it gets boring to me. And as far as not having to be sneaky on Metal Gear, I know from the little I have played that there are parts that almost penalize you for not sneaking though. Like extra enemies rushing you if you don't sneak around.

Re: Games that are considered 'Classics'
The writing is what ticked me off the most but even without it I thought Other M was a pretty bland, by-the-numbers action game. Lots of pointless additions like the finishing moves just annoyed me. I never felt like I was playing Metroid but rather some other modern action title with a Metroid mod. It's the only Metroid game in my collection I sold off (but to be fair I've thought of getting rid of Prime Hunters a few times).Sarge wrote:Heck, other than the characterization, I'll even vouch for Other M.
On the stealth topic I'm really bad at those sort of games and I don't like playing them often. They really stress me out for some reason even though I totally understand the appeal and have had fun with stuff like Thief. I hate when games that are otherwise all action throw in forced stealth segments the most because they often do it badly.
I don't have an issue with Metal Gear Solid's gameplay but I never cared for the bad Tom Clancy plots. Just isn't my thing.
Re: Games that are considered 'Classics'
I guess you could call it being "penalized", but it's just a simple game mechanic that you can see in more than just stealth games. It's essentially just respawning enemies. When you trigger these alarm sequences, you can either:TheGregzilla wrote:And as far as not having to be sneaky on Metal Gear, I know from the little I have played that there are parts that almost penalize you for not sneaking though. a) hide
b) slaughter everything
Unless I have a goal in mind for the playthrough, whenever I play MGS I play with a hybrid of the two. I generally try to sneak around, but sometimes I don't care and just run and gun. In MGS 1&2, I will wait for the alarm phase to end. In MGS 3, the alarm phase is too long to wait out and I pretty much run through the game killing everything in my path.
If you just have no interest in stealth games it's all good, but MGS is not some 100% stealth required game. Very far from it.
Re: Games that are considered 'Classics'
Huh, I always thought there was more than enough exploration with Other M, even if it was gated at times. I didn't have any problems with finishers and whatnot at all. But then again, I did like Ninja Gaiden, so the combat probably wouldn't bother me, regardless.
As pertaining to stealth games, I tend to get stressed out playing them as well, and tend to avoid them. But not always. Metal Gear is a significant exception, and it's legitimately good stuff. I played through most of Splinter Cell, and it was pretty good, too. And Mark of the Ninja does 2D stealth right. But it's not a genre that I actively seek out.
