Master.

Good way to define things, yes?

I think those terms work.

I use the term "beat" whenever I reach a game's ending.

The term "complete" applies whenever I reach a game's ending and finish every side-quest, obtain every ending, unlock all bonus features, etc.

I do not often apply the term "master" to video games, and I think that it would only apply to games where the terms "beat" and "complete" are synonymous (i.e., older games like Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros., etc.). I also think that the criteria for "mastering" a game is generally pretty subjective.

Are you on Backloggery by any chance? On their site, you can choose from "Beat", "Complete", or "Master" to mark your finished games with. Here are their definitions for each category -

They sound just like your descriptions, and I think we can all agree on these.

I was on backloggery (and might still be. My name would be Luke and would have a Ninja Gaiden marquee) but haven't had the time to keep up with it.

But yeah, I totally agree with the labels given the provided descriptions.

If someone can actually beat Ninja Gaiden in 20 minutes without losing a life (NES or XBox version), then they most definetly deserve the title "mastered".

This is it... this cute little furball of a game... pissed me off so much.

Is it just me? This game was frustrating as balls. Granted I didn't get many skill points or health upgrades, that surely would have helped a lot (seeing videos it looks like people have twice as much health as I had). But yeah, from the clunky controls, unresponsive slingshot annoyances, bad checkpoints, bosses that went on forever, nonstop instant death trial and error design, holy crap I'd rather play more DMC on Dante Must Die or something.

Are these issues fixed in the sequels? Seriously makes me weary of them. I'll check out Jak and Sly before I attempt more of these...

You're not alone. I recently picked up a PS3 with the R&C and Sly collections. I tried out Ratchet and Clank first, and encountered many of the same issues that you experienced. It felt like a slog, but I wanted to experience the series in order. I felt things improved in Going Commando, but the series seemed to find its groove in Up Your Arsenal. I actually enjoyed Tools of Destruction the most so far, as I still need to play the last games of the Future trilogy.

As for Sly, I did the same thing that you're doing, alternating games. Personally, Sly took me by surprise, and I ended up enjoying that series more than Ratchet and Clank. There seemed to be a greater focus on platforming in Sly, while R&C seemed to focus on the weapons.

In some of the videos I've skimmed, yeah I think Sly might be the one to win me over. I said it elsewhere... but I still prefer Mario styled games when it comes to platformers. Gex, Banjo, Spyro, etc. So yeah, I just love actually jumping and weird level design, navigating, weird puzzles, etc. None of these things were the problem in R&C, it was the annoying enemies and lack of health/good checkpoints, which was the brunt of the game.

Another thing I noticed is that some of the mid levels were super easy. But even if I had all the weapons I did early on, it was just like the enemies were randomly super hard on some planets, and not on others. So the difficulty just seemed kind of all over the place.

I do want to keep going with the R&C series, just don't see myself obsessing over them like my roommate does and I don't know if I could ever run through the first again after that... lol.

I can say the writing and characters were great, I'm a sucker for sci-fi, and at times the game even kind of made me think of Metroid Prime which is cool. Colorful, weird sci-fi worlds. So yeah... I do want to play more. But phew, I'll take a breather before I hit up the next one. lol

I'm starting to wonder if it was the sixth gen that made me so leery of sequels, but I played through, and enjoyed the original Ratchet & Clank after it got a greatest hits release. I eventually picked up Going Commando afterward, and did not enjoy it. I got really bored with it, really fast, and never played the series again.

I absolutely love the original Sly Cooper. It's possibly my favorite 6th gen platformer, and I think it holds up really well today. I've never even played any of the other games in the series, though. Partly, I think, because Adam Sessler panned the second one, and I just figured the sequels wouldn't be worth my time. I should probably give them a chance at some point.

Adam Sessler's an idiot. I don't value his opinion on any game.

The Mario platforming series is my all-time favorite series, so we seem to have similar tastes.

Ratchet and Clank does have an odd difficulty curve, and felt that the final boss was a long, tedious affair, though I may have approached the battle differently than other players.

The difficulty spikes reappear in the later R&C games as well. Because the later games include a level-up system for your health and weapons, it is almost as if the game forces you to "grind" for experience, taking deaths in the process. I really wanted to like the R&C series more than I did, but it didn't click for me in the way that Sly did.

As for Sly, I really loved the first game. Tight controls, clean art style, and old-school sensibilities with a more linear progression than what you may expect from a typical 3D platformer. It reminded me more of Crash Bandicoot or Mario 3D Land than say Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, but it is excellent all the same.

The later games, on the other hand, follow the Mario 64 mold a little more closely, with a focus on hub world, missions, and collectibles. Fortunately, Sly 2, 3, an even 4 are all so well-done that I didn't mind the shift in gameplay, as a lot of the platforming was kept intact.
