Without a doubt. Especially during that period of the four and six player cabs.

We don't need to run this into the ground, but I have certainly pumped dollars upon dollars into Golden Axe and Altered Beast cabs. I didn't have that option on the Genesis. When I first beat those games without the option of throwing in quarters I felt like I mastered the game.

exactly. You mastered it. That seems to be the issue here. You seem to want this to be a "Games Mastered 2013" thread. But it's not.

I saw what Noise did last night and Luke's response and I suddenly felt a hot wind blast over this thread, one that could easily spread throughout the forum.

I too credit fed Turtles In Time to complete it. Not in MAME or a compilation mind you, but the actual arcade machine. I used at least 30-40 lives, at 1 token per play, that would be around $5-$10. It cost me a lot to do that. A good point was brought up that those type of beat em ups were made for collecting money. Multiple players and 1-2 lives per credit means a lot of moolah. By design, they're not made to clear on a credit. You'd have to really memorize the game to do that.

I too used to play shmups through to the end by means of credit feeding. I no longer do that. I don't list any arcade games, with the exception of Turtles In Time, that I cannot 1cc. I've done a whole mess of light gun games on a credit, and I even have one listed from earlier this year. I highlighted TiT and put it on my list for the fact it was a TR game and I had a rare opportunity to play the real thing.

Why don't we ask this guy on the internet

He cannot be beaten with credit feeds, nor reasoned with a 1cc. You have to put every gaming experience, thought, and skill anyone could ever have into a shape the size of a tiny pinhole to get through the weak spot somewhere on the forehead. It happened to one guy and man, it was not pretty.

1. Okamiden (NDS)
2. Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection (Wii)
3. Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection (Wii)
4. Cave Story 3D (3DS)
5. Theatrhytm Final Fantasy (3DS)
6. Rayman Origins (Wii)
7. Kim Possible: What's The Switch (PS2)
8. Super Street Fighter 4: 3D Edition (3DS)
9. Metal Slug Advance (GBA)
10. Caveman Ninja (ARC)
11. Wario Land II (GBC)
12. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GC)
13. Link's Crossbow Training (Wii)
14. Wario Land III (GBC)
15. Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (DS)
16. Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land (GB)
17. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Wii)
18. Professor Layton & The Last Specter (DS)

I rolled the credits on Professor Layton & The Last Specter this morning. It is the fourth game in the Professor Layton series and the first part of the Professor Layton "prequel" trilogy. Although this one lacked the late-game emotional heft of the other entries in the series - Professor Layton & The Unwound Future has a particularly unexpected and touching ending - I did enjoy it thoroughly, and most of its puzzles remain challenging despite my experience with the other Professor Layton games. I recommend it to fans of the series, and it would be a great starting point for newcomers.

I usually "complete" Professor Layton games, and I will probably work my way through most of the "bonus" puzzles later this week to unlock all of the game's bonus features. I do not, however, see myself starting up "London Life", the 50-100 hour(!) RPG that Level 5 amazingly included as a bonus feature. (It is supposed to be pretty good, however; so, I may dive into it at some point...)

....

I recently started Pandora's Tower (Wii), and I am really enjoying it so far. I suspect that will be the next game that I add to my "Games Beaten" list, but I may re-work and my "Summer Gaming Challenge" list a bit and try to get through some of the shorter games before the end of September. My daughter also has me playing both LoZ: A Link to the Past (SNES) and Arc Rise Fantasia (Wii) for her entertainment right now; so, my collection is pulling my time in a lot of different directions right now. I am enjoying al of it, however; so, you will not hear any complaints from me!

And there it is.

Beat.
Complete.
Master.

Good way to define things, yes?

May I ask why your daughter wants you to play Arc Rise Fantasia? Is it just because it has big colorful anime characters?

And don't forget about Ys VI. 8)

I think those terms work.

I use the term "beat" whenever I reach a game's ending.

The term "complete" applies whenever I reach a game's ending and finish every side-quest, obtain every ending, unlock all bonus features, etc.

I do not often apply the term "master" to video games, and I think that it would only apply to games where the terms "beat" and "complete" are synonymous (i.e., older games like Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros., etc.). I also think that the criteria for "mastering" a game is generally pretty subjective.

She thinks Ryfia is "so beautiful!!" Also, the brightly-colored, quickly-paced battles are so exciting that she is compelled to get her sword, wand, shield, and princess dress so that she can reenact the battles - as Ryfia - while I am playing. It is really cute.

Since my children don't get to watch much television, I have only played the game for a few minutes at a time, and I am only now at the Dragon Prison. I found the game really, really easy, but the fight against the first boss, Deathchanter, was no joke. I am enjoying the game so far - and my daughter is really enjoying it - but I wish I understood the mechanics a bit better. (Too many things happen at random during the battles, and I feel that I am only 75% in control of my characters actions...) I suspect that I will chip away at this one for the better part of a year - and well after my daughter loses interest - before finally pushing through it.

Without a doubt, but it sparks conversation.

"I MASTERED Ninja Gaiden by beating it in twenty three minutes without losing a life" can be polarizing.

At the end of the day this thread is about posting your personal list of games you have beaten throughout the year. Some people don't count DLC, some do, some people don't count credit feeding, some do, some people count it is seeing the credits, some don't.

It is a personal list, with no set criteria, so everyone shut the Funky Cold Medina up.
