So it has been announced that ESO will have a subscription of $15/month to play. I myself think they need to have a free-to-play option like the rest of the MMOs in this period of time. Yes I know WoW is still pay-to-play, I believe they should also have a free-to-play option in my humble opinion.
What are everyone else's thoughts or the subject of ESO?

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
I wasn't interested when they announced it. I'm still not interested.
Subscription model does have its upsides though. Serves to filter the playerbase a bit, and the company doesn't tend to feel compelled to try and make things just that much more convenient if you shell out some money in the cash shop...

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
It will end up free-to-play eventually. I have zero doubt. Like a lot of MMORPGs before it they'll realize it's their best option.
WoW gets away with it because it's been around so long and has a playerbase that's not interested in stopping now.
Companies have started to realize that if you're going to charge a mandatory subscription fee that people tend to stay with one game and for a long time that game was WoW to the point where no other MMO stood a chance against it.
Love or hate free-to-play models, and they certainly have as many cons as pros, they changed the balance.
I guess they figure they can get away with it by using the strength of the Elder Scrolls franchise alone but that's what The Old Republic thought about Star Wars and it didn't work out for them.

Why does Elder Scrolls need an MMO? Aren't the regular games dull and tedious enough?

As soon as people heard it was $15 a month, everybody I talked to said "fuck that!". I have to agree, it made the decision for me much easier. I'm not getting it.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
I've always stayed away from MMOs because of the monthly fee ... I'll probably stay away from TESO for the same reason.
Sucks, it actually looked pretty good. But considering my purchase habits $15 a month is like 2-5 games.

Re: Elder Scrolls Online
I'm sure you're probably right about that. I am interested in playing, just not enough to shell out the $15/month. I just wish I wouldn't have to wait a year before they come to the conclusion that free-to-play with a store is the way to go.Gunstar Green wrote:It will end up free-to-play eventually. Re: Elder Scrolls Online
Another one for the "wait for F2P" club.
A big problem is that so many high profile MMO's have gone F2P, so many people will hold out on newly launched MMO, assuming they will eventually hit the F2P model.

On the bright side most of these games launch with pretty severe issues so by the time F2P comes around many of them should be ironed out.Sano wrote:I'm sure you're probably right about that.
