Wii, 360, PS3, and PC from 2005-2013 ...

I tend to prefer action-adventure and action games, I'm sure these choices reflect that. I really haven't been able to stick with RPGs much at all over the last ten years. Always feels like I could be doing something else, though I sure do own a lot of them!

2005: Call of Duty 2 (PC)
For years it was my favorite FPS. I still think it's a fantastic game.

2006: Twilight Princess (Wii)
If I were including the previous generation or handhelds, it would be Okami or New Super Mario Bros. I'd also say TES4 Oblivion, but I, frankly, haven't spent that much time with it.

2007: Uncharted (PS3)
Runners up: STALKER, Unreal Tournament 3, Retro Game Challenge, Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction, The Simpson's Game.

2008: Grand Theft Auto IV (PC)
Runners up: Elebits, Fallout 3, MGS4, MarioKart Wii, Valkyria Chronicles.

2009: Uncharted 2 (PS3) Surprise.
2009 had a crap load of great games: Borderlands, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Bayonetta, Left 4 Dead 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Yakuza 3, Wolverine, R&C Crack in Time, Batman Arkham Asylum.

But, Uncharted 2 is one of the best games I've ever played. I'd put it up there with Super Metroid, personally.

2010: Red Dead Redemption (PS3)
Transformers, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Ghost Trick, Enslaved, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sonic Colors ... some really great games. I think liked RDR the most though.

2011: Portal 2 (PC)
Uncharted 3 was good, but wasn't the best.
Batman Arkham City, I think was the second best game that year, for me.

2012: Borderlands 2 (PC)
Also had Adventure Time and Asura's Wrath, Journey, New Super Mario Bros. U, Quantum Conundrum, The Walking Dead, ZombiU, Spec Ops The Line, Dishonored.

Some really interesting and fun games last year.

2013: Who can say?

So far, I've really liked Lego City Undercover, The Last of Us, and CoJ Gunslinger.

Still have to try Dragon's Crown, Killer is Dead, Ni No Kuni, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 3, and Remember Me
And within the next couple months is a massive drop of games.

Though ... when it's all said and done, unless 3D Mario World or Donkey Kong charm me to death, it'll probably be Last of Us.

2013 - The Last of Us (for now. Waiting for GTA V, GT6)
2012 - Persona 4 Golden
2011 - Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection
2010 - Gran Turismo 5
2009 - Mushihimesama Futari 1.5
2008 - Valkyria Chronicles
2007 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2006 - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

I know people like to hate on the COD series, but COD4 has some of the best gaming memories of my life. 2007/2008 was about the time most of my friends traded their game consoles for wedding rings and diapers, so that was the last time a majority of my friends and I played games together. I was living in Japan at the time, so it was also how I kept in touch with friends in the U.S. and Europe. We all just talk free long distance via headsets in a private match. It never ceased to amaze us we were all in different continents, playing and talking. In the beginning we had a lot of connection problems, but that was later resolved. Many times after an hour or two of private matches, we'd all just walk around the maps while chatting and catching up.....and still sneaking in a dirty kill. Good times. It the end of an era.

I actually compiled a GOTY (consoles only) list last week, going back to my first year of gaming. Waaaaaayyy back in 1987. I had to look for a list of NES/SNES games for what specific year they came out (as those early gaming years are a little fuzzy) and I would rate each game based on the year they were released, NOT the year I played them. For instance, I just played Super Metroid this year, but I still gave it my 1994 GOTY.

It was actually quite fun (I am OCD when it comes to creating "Best Of" lists). The best years for me in gaming were 1991, 1992 and 2010. It was hard for me to pick GOTY for those 3 years. Other years were weak for me, specifically from '98-'00 (when I was more interested in partying/girls).

Anyways here is my GOTY from 1987 on:

1987 NES Wizards and Warriors
1988 NES Double Dragon
1989 NES Ninja Gaiden
1990 NES Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse
1991 SNES Actraiser
1992 SNES Street Fighter 2
1993 Genesis Mortal Kombat
1994 SNES Super Metroid
1995 SNES NFL Madden '96
1996 PS1 Resident Evil
1997 PS1 Castlevania: SotN
1998 PS1 Tenchu
1999 PS1 Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
2000 PS1 Tenchu 2: BotSA
2001 PS2 Grand Theft Auto 3
2002 PS2 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
2003 Xbox Star Wars: KotOR
2004 PS2 Star Wars: Battlefront
2005 PS2 God of War
2006 PS2 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
2007 PS3 Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
2008 PS3 Dead Space
2009 PS3 Batman: Arkham Asylum
2010 PS3 Darksiders
2011 PS3 Batman: Arkham City
2012 PS3 Borderlands 2
2013 PS3 The Last of Us

I just found this game last night in storage. I totally forgot I bought it, it's still shrink-wrapped.

For me it would be,

2006 - Football Manager 2007
2007 - Virtua Fighter 5
2008 - GTA4
2009 - Batman: Arkham Asylum
2010 - Mass Effect 2
2011 - Skyrim
2012- Hotline Miami

These would be the games that I have either spent the most time with, or left the biggest impact on me, though not the games I would specify as the "technical" best. Wouldn't like to say what 2013's game will be, but so far it's Bioshock Infinite.

This generation was pretty much transparent to me. There was too many stupid trends and gimmicks just so the company can play "me too's" for having the next best thing but wound up looking like they are just ripping off each other. I stayed away from most of the games that where out that time. But if I had to give it a try. These are the following

2006: Guitar Hero II
2007: Portal
2008: Left 4 Dead
2009: Batman: Arkham Asylum
2010: Super Meat Boy
2011: Portal 2 (note: I would of put Minecraft here, but at that point of release the charm was gone)
2012: The Pinball Arcade
2013: Bioshock Infinite
Top 101 Favorite Games of All Time

CURRENTLY OWNED: NES, SNES, GC, GB, GBA:SP, GEN, SAT, DC, PS2, PS3, PSP, X360, NGPC, Neo-Geo AES, PCE Duo, PS4, PSX, oXbox

I'd say play it but you could get a pretty penny for it on eBay right now. The price has skyrocketed lately.

I really liked it though. Great sci-fi plot with some alternate routes through the game that effect the story and what crew and equipment is available to you. It's a fusion of RPG and visual novel with a bit of strategy.

It's really unique and ambitious. Anybody who likes a good space opera or just a good RPG story should dig it. I don't think it's for everyone but it might be my #1 DS game and I'm not even a fan of RPGs.

It's a bit of a nightmare for OCD gamers though since it's impossible to get everything on a single play-through and it's also really easy to miss stuff as you progress.
