They are for sure fighting that old reputation. Especially Chrysler group. They still don't make much in the way of good vehicles at this point. Ford has been rocking for at least a decade and GM is getting up there too now.

Also, if you're looking at a Civic, maybe look at a Dodge Dart. It's actually an Alfa Romeo in disguise. I don't know how reliable they actually are but a lot of people really seem to like them. They apparently drive quite well.

The malaise era is a big reason imports got such a foothold here. But everything is so international at this point with 'imports' being built here and so many parts of 'domestics' being made abroad that anyone that's only looking at brands as opposed to specific quality or features is a fool.

I tried to argue the American ares are no good and was told they actually are. Why do they get so a bad wrap then?

I had an American car - a Jeep Grand Cherokee - in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was terrible. It always had annoying little problems, but as soon as the warranty expired, everything that could go wrong with it went wrong. As I understand it, the quality of American cars from the late 1970s until fairly recently was pretty abysmal, and I think that a lot of American manufacturers are still struggling with the reputational damage from that period.

My father used to work as a regional manager for Jack in the Box, so they would give him a new car year year. Obviously they aren't going to by imports as company cars, so all he could choose from was American. This is in the 90's btw. He chose he Pontiac Grand Am. Being a regional manager he had to drive a good 75+ a day. He has told me horror storys about how the engine over heated on the 10 while it was pouring and he had to get to a important meeting. Talk about bad luck. So I was kind of taught as a kid that American cars are poop.

I really know nothing about this belief on American cars. I've honestly never heard of it. I'm more truck oriented, of course, so that might have to do with it.

In all honesty, our 80's model and my Dad's 90's model trucks haven't given us any issues in particular. Considering the 80's has a frankensteined motor that was originally fuel injected, then redone with a carburetor, there are about two runs of wires and such, all of which have been undone and replaced with a third run, along with block leaking and a ton of other issues. Really, other than the fact that it doesn't idle until it gets hot, it runs surprisingly well.

Let see who wins the 1/4 and 1/2 mile, the GTO or the Lacer Evo? For the mile we got this sweet little baby called the GTR aka Godzilla.

Why bother with drag races, when straight lines is what American cars have traditionally been good at that, it's racing which separates muscle cars from sports cars with smaller engines? Evo Lancer is one of the best cars there is for price: every day usability: performance:price ratio if you want a car that goes fast. Sure it's more expensive than a muscle car but not by that much, but it can offroad, has room for 5 people (so do muscle cars, but I'm comparing this car to super cars also) and as proven by Top Gear, it can go round a track faster than Lamborghinis and other much, much more expensive super cars.

There are still a lot of people like my dad who won't even look at anything made by the Chrysler corporation thanks to the 80's and 90's.

My mom had a 97 Grand Am and I remember it being a pretty solid car. No serious issues, but she also wasn't driving it 75 miles a day.

bandwagons, stereotypes, i dont know, im a Dodge fan and ive had 2 Dakota's and plan on getting a Dart.

I have a friend who was a Dodge fan, and then he started doing WW2 re-enacting, and he re-enacts the german side, and bought a VW Jetta based on that alone, i think it's dumb. But people can buy whatever i guess.

I owned a 1994 Intrepid, so I should despise dodge. But my current car is great. No problems. Of course I say this while I'm about 500 miles away from the warranty expiring...

I'll also add that I have a friend with an 05 Dodge Magnum, built during the dark daimler years, but that thing has done him well for over 100,000 miles and he's not exactly a super-caring car owner.

When my dad first got back into the whole car mood when I was 10 or so we bought a Magnum R/T. He had a boat at the time, and in those years where we really didn't have much at home to look forward to we would take road trips in it with his boat in tow. Thing hit 140,000 miles with no issues. Really was a pretty solid car. Considering the stories I have heard about other Chrysler vehicles at the time I would say it might be the only one that was solid.
