Classic Anime

Post by Sano »

What anime series do you consider a classic? Old or new series. And by classic I mean a series that is well liked by lots of people.

I submit:
Trigun and Cowboy Bebop.

Oh here I was thinking this was going to be a thread about like Space Battleship Yamato or Project A-Ko or something.

Berserk
Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex
Monster
Black Lagoon
Last Exile

Those are the first five that come to mind for me.

Legend of Galactic Heroes.

The only bad thing about it, is after watching it you might be unable to enjoy any other anime because they suck in comparison. Even the good ones.

Considering all the OVAs and movies and main series, you should be good to go with LOTGH for half your life anyway.

I'll another classic series...

Armored Trooper Votoms

Is it safe to call Gurren Lagann classic yet?

Is this a stealth suggestion thread?

I grew up with Voltron, Defender of the Universe. That counts as "classic" right?

In college my buddies and I would watch FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR, AKIRA, APPLESEED, NINJA SCROLL, and GHOST IN THE SHELL a lot. I think those are borderline classics.

Better than every Gundam series combined?

Although I am a big fan of the older Gundam series and would consider the original and Zeta classics.

Also Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star, Space Adventure Cobra, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Devilman, Macross, Saint Seiya, Space Runaway Ideon, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. I could probably list a bunch more but you get the point. I see anything after the 80s as the cut off for something being considered "classic".

And of course, the Most Dangerous classic of them all.

You guys have come up with some good titles to be considered for the title of classic. Some I haven't even seen, a few I will admit I've never heard of either. Will check them out.

I've watched through LOGH's main series twice now. Third time will come as well. Though I think I'll do it chronologically story-wise the next time, so start with Gaidens and go from there.

Votoms is pretty damn good as well, I watched through all the series and movies a while back. I did not, however, like the ending to the main series. I liked it when it was a gritty, down-to-earth, war-torn mech anime, but what happens there...well, you know what happens. I just didn't care for it.
