I'm really dumb when it comes to display types and cords, but i am guessing the ones with just the cable (no convertor box) are for Dreamcast with VGA mods and the ones with boxes are for all dreamcast?
I am planning to use VGA straight to my TV. No PC or Computer. Just an HDTV with a VGA.
does the brand make a difference at all, honestly? Or for the most part, will they pretty much all display the same? if they are all pretty much the same, I would like to buy the cheapest one.
The difference is the cable type has no composite/s-video jacks for incompatible games.
You have to swap cable.
Systems: Genesis, Super Nintendo, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Xbox 360, and Windows PC
Handhelds: Gameboy Advance SP, Nintendo DSi, and New Nintendo 3DS

Thanks for that.
I think I might just get the box version then with VGA and S Video.
Do you guys have a particular brand recommendation?

Hmm...
1. Performance VGA Box
2. NAKI VGA Box
3. Cabou VGA cable
Those are recommendations of what personally own and use among many types and brands. I don't own a Hanzo VGA box, not yet at least. But I've heard great things about it!

Is there a significant quality increase in these better brands?
I might just buy whats cheap, since I don't heavily use my DC.

No. They produce the exact same signal quality, and their overall build quality is also top notch. My presonal preferrence for the Perfomance model stems from its exclusively unique feature of having a VGA pass through built into the box which allows for some very versatile set up options within various types of gaming rigs.
Anyone know a place where I can buy a vga box for 40 bucks?
I won a bid in eBay for a cable type VGA (no box) for 28 bucks. But I would prefer to get a box.

Is there a rule of thumb concerning Dreamcast VGA? I keep hearing that Dreamcast VGA won't work on a number of newer televisions. My laptop works via VGA, but my will my Dreamcast? For the record, my TV is a Samsung LNT3753H.
