Microsoft has done a lot of research, not into how to make things fun ... but in how to manipulate the pleasure centers. Achievements is one of the things to come out from that, and in a lot of ways, its feedback functions like a slot machine.
There are a ton of ways video games have always done that...but the writeups I'm aware of from MS's researchers were looking more at the Skinner Box. Then again, the author retracted his statements regarding it last year.

I think most of it isn't wrong per se. Just that it's less a construct of the companies, and more a recognition of why players like the things they do.

Achievements are less like that I think, since they're fixed. The bigger slot machine psychology stuff would be random rewards in MMOs or something. Kill this NM over and over and it has a 5% chance to drop what you want. Didn't drop this time? Maybe next time!
That's a bit different from having a list of stuff you've accomplished in games. It might enhance the aspect of game successes being used as a surrogates for harder-to-achieve progress in real life...but games do that anyway.

I think the achievements are a nice motivators when they reward you for completing a game , like an achievement for completing level 9 or defeating the final boss. I think its a negative once they put in odd stuff like kill 10,000 enemies or collect 100 pigeons scattered in a huge world.

Any way, last I heard achievements are no longer an attraction. It only worked on the 360, the Wii did not have any, and I am not sure the PS3 trophy system got a following. It also completely failed on the iOS platform.

I am slightly confused. Can you explain to me how achievements are a positive thing for rewarding you for something that is the bare minimum in the game. "Congratulations on completing the 3rd level of the game! We knew you were going to do that anyways, but still here is your reward, because you are special!"

I enjoy the achievements that push you to do something that you have never done before. For instance, in Skyrim, there is an achievement in getting a large bounty with all the major cities in the game. I would never have thought to do so, but, when I felt bored, I devised an ingenious heist with an escape plan and everything. I would not have done so if that achievement wasn't there and it added a level of fun that wasn't implied by the main objectives of the game.

On topic though, one of the things I loved about New Super Luigi U that deals with achievements is this. Throughout the levels there are tons of hidden Luigis that you can discover. What is great is that as soon as you find one, BOOM, hit up the Miiverse and share it. There needs to be more visual achievements and discoveries that games should implement with the WiiU to encourage people to explore and share.

It kind of helps you going. Its like giving yourself a pat on the back. People like to be complemented and this is some sort of a complement. If you beat the final boss and unlock "Master of Universe" achievements I think many people will feel good about themselves. Of course, I am not against other achievements like side quests or reaching maximum level in an RPG . What I am against is doing some sort of grinding or collection 5 items scattered around the world which in the end does not give you a real return like unlocking a gun or a level.

I didn't get what you mean by the Luigi game, probably because I am unfamiliar with the Bros. franchise and I do not own a Wii but if you mean that achievements should reward you with unlockables and extra ability I do agree. It is better than showing a number of points next to your name.

Awful way of using achievements...

The only thing that should help you to keep going is the game itself.

This is the correct way of using them, it helps you to try and play the game in a original form that you couldn't think for yourself.

Well its all opinion based. For example, I believe in App-purchases for stuff like an extra life and a new custom is pretty stupid but last I heard it was making millions of money for Apple and iOS developers. So while you believe that achievements the way I put it out was stupid, don't think it will not work on the average consumer to keep him playing on.

They shouldn't have announced that so early. Sales of the system have been slow as it is, but who will buy one now when in two months you can get that sweet bundle for $50 less?

Edit: If they had a proper user name system I would so tempted to buy that bundle and transfer everything. I hope they actually start selling the GamePad by itself and that be one of the options.

What's the deal there? Is there a way to go from WiiU to WiiU?
