Really? Is there something I'm missing here? Why would you go through the trouble when you can just pick up a super gameboy, which is official and has extra features
The same reason why people get portable NESes instead of a PSP with a NES emulator. IT'S COOLER!
The first line on the site is:
From the "because I can" department comes the NES RetroVision for playing classic Game Boy games on your NES!
Sure a Super Gameboy or Gameboy Player is better. But this is really neat.
Honestly i prefer to collect nes and other home consoles and emulate the portables. At first i thought it was fun and cool playing my old gameboy on the Subway or bus but really its rather in convienent to have a big bulky game boy and a big bag of carts. Not to mention some of those carts can be rather pricey. In the end I found it far more convienent to grab my psp with CFW with every game loaded on it. And when I'm getting off the bus or subway I can just slide it into sleep mode and instantly save my progress until my next opportunity. Not to mention alot of gameboy games dont even have a save feature being able to save state when I run out of batteries or time is a huge boon, but i understand that emulation is not for everyone and I too prefer real hardware. But in the case of handhelds convienience trumps real hardware for me.
Maybe they're not the most convenient way to game on the go anymore but they're still really fun to collect and store in a vintage 1990's trapper keeper.

This is what I do. But I use the longer sized 6-pocket pouches. I found that I was damaging a lot of plastics using the 9-pocket ones because they barely fit and if I wasn't careful they'd split the seperation.
I also keep my GBA and Neo Geo Pocket Color games in them. I just wish my Game Gear games would fit in them.

What do you mean by "not the most convenient way to game on the go"?

Well, with the Game Boy, you have two options for your gaming away from home. You can either take one game cartridge at a time or you can take a bag full of cartridges. Compare this to Smart Phones or a PSP Go which both allow you to keep numerous games on the device itself. The PSP and Phone take up much less space while having many more games. I think that's what Gunstar Green was getting at.

Your post made me ebay search "trapper keeper" to find that these things have become stupidly expensive: $35-$55.
I suppose this is a result of the nostalgia factor times the durability (or lack thereof) inherent to the trapper keeper. I got a new one of these every August when I was a boy. By the following May my trapper keeper was torn to shreds. Meade probably engineered them to wear out before the start of the next school year.
I'll keep an eye open for one next time I go thrift shopping.
