Shadowrun Returns!
Re: Shadowrun Returns!
Looks awesome, be interested to read thoughts when you've played it a bit.

Looks interesting just for being a modern CRPG. But I'm not too crazy about cyber punk, so I'll wait and see.

I'm about 10 minutes in, which gives you your first taste of the combat engine and I got to do some dialog trees. The dialog gives a good sense of the general shady nature of the world; rather than the good/evil choices you tend to see in fantasy worlds most of my available choices have been more like what a real person involved in a shady profession would do.
As for the combat, if you've played the new XCOM game the combat will be immediately familiar to you. It's an AP system where most actions (moving X squares, firing, reloading) cost a single point, though I believe some spells will cost more. Everyone starts off with 2 AP; I'm not sure if you can get more. When you are standing next to objects it will tell you how much cover it gives you and automatically have you take cover. It's pretty much lifted wholesale from XCOM with a bit of RPG flare added.

Wow, this game was already released? Where's all the hype and discussion? I myself just found out that this game is already out

I'm about halfway through the game. It very much feels like a translation of a tabletop game. There's a lot of scene setting dialog both in conversations and in between area loading screens that add to the experience. The gave is quite linear, but that actually makes sense given that this is supposed to be a digital representation of a tabletop session. Your average DM isn't going to create a hub area and allow you to go back and forth searching for little quests. He's going to have an overarching meta plot, and have you run onto singleton quests midway through which help further your overarching goal.

I've only played 15 minutes of it, but so far so good. They nail the vibe right away. Dialogue is fun and smarmy. Combat is enjoyable. Art style is occasionally a bit hammy, but I mostly dig it. It's sort of weird that this 80s/90s vision of a cyberpunk future seems more unlikely now than ever. I would paint a very different bleak future now, based on what has happened in real technological development since Shadowrun first debuted. I still love all this stuff about deckers and cyberware though, especially with that mix of shamanism and magic. The setting feels like a dated future, but a future vision that I still think is cool regardless.

Re: Shadowrun Returns!
Just got the game today and played it couple of hours. So far this game has been great and from what I've heard, it is like that all the way through it. Why isn't it more popular? It's like a decade from the release of last RPG like this

Re: Shadowrun Returns!
Isn't there a collector edition for kickstarters? I'd rather play an excellent DL only RPG that's 20 USD brand new (possibly less with all the sales in Steam) than buy the physical release of some overhyped, substandard AAA RPG for 60 USD

Not only that, but it's only available online from Steam. No other digital distribution services are being considered. I verified this myself by contacting the developers directly. I was going to buy this game but considering it's Steam-only currently then they won't be getting my money. If it was on GOG or Desura instead they'd already have it. Oh well maybe they'll change their minds further down the line.BoneSnapDeez wrote:No physical release...
