Help recalling an RPG!

Post by KoLAddict »

I need help. I completely thought it was Phantasy Star 2, but I'm almost done beating it again (after all these years), and it isn't.

All I have to go on to describe it is it is a 2D top/down perspective RPG (so roaming dungeons and the world map is like Phantasy Star 2/3/4, Final Fantasy 4/5/6, etc.) and there's a building on the map you go in. When it loads, it's a small, straight path forward, and then you click on a throne/shrine, and you fight a boss. No exploring or anything for this dungeon. I believe it was the final boss, and I could swear it was Dark Force/Falz but it can't be, at least not in Phantasy Star 2.
Huge RPG fan.

..........any other info? It's gonna be pretty tough to figure out a game based on that alone.

Do you know what system it was for? Was the setting sci-fi, like Phantasy Star?
Long, straight paths before a final boss is pretty common element in RPGs.

I honestly can't think of any RPG that has what I'm describing in it (since apparently Phantasy Star 2 was inaccurate for a memory, lol). I'm probably wording it wrong, I'll try elaborating better so it seems less common, since this is driving me insane. It isn't a long straight path, it's literally entering the dungeon/building from the outside, and only being able to go straight forward a little ways before initiating the battle. It isn't a dungeon that is traversed to this room, or a dungeon that has alternate areas to explore but you can choose to go straight up to the boss (like Garland in FF1), it's literally you start on the world map, walk into the area, and go straight up to the boss, no sidetracking in this area is possible at all.

I know it's not a lot to go on, was just wondering if it'd spark anyone else's memories, or if anyone's played a game recently that's had this in it. It's bugging the crap out of me since I always thought it was Phantasy Star 2 and am now realizing it isn't. If you have any game ideas feel free to toss them out, if you have any bosses in games you remember that sound similar feel free to toss those out as well, I know for sure I'll know it if I see it.

My only other option is going through and slowly playing through all the old SNES/Genesis RPGs. Maybe emulator with cheats on or something just to find out.

Thanks for any help all!
Huge RPG fan.

Dragon Warrior 1 or 2? Sounds like 2 would be more likely than 1, but you walk straight into a castle, then walk upstairs to a fake king. Then you have to walk up a tower to a boss seated at a throne. That's my best guess.

Can you narrow it down to a console, or even a generation of consoles?

An easier method:

Go to YouTube and type "[Name of game] final boss". Watch the video.

Do you think the game was 16-bit?

Yeah, I know it wasn't anything after the SNES/GENESIS era.

Was it released in the US?

Real long shot, but in terms of games that look visually similar to Phantasy Star II, there's Surging Aura released on the Mega Drive in Japan.

You're sure it's not one of the other Phantasy Star games, right?

I, III, and IV have very short final dungeons. Not a straight line exactly, but short.

I've played most every SNES RPG released in America and this isn't ringing any bells. I'll look through my list (see my signature) soon though.

Now that I think about it, the original Phantasy Star sounds like a pretty good bet.
