nah, hasn't that series been going on like forever? I want something with an overarching story arc for a mystery. you know, having questions answered only having more questions come up
It has an overarching story, but it moves slowly. Serious time investment involved. Why don't you try out a few of my favorite cases? They should be fine on their own.

Episode 558-561 - "The Mansion of Death and the Red Wall"

Episode 304 - "The Trembling Police Headquarters: Twelve Million Hostages!"
It's a two-hour special.

^ The Detective Conan movies might be the best place to start. They have a higher animation budget in addition to telling a more involved story.

I enjoyed some of the movies, but they have lame cases usually. The newer ones are less interesting.

First Detective Conan material I saw was a dubbed version of the first movie (Time Bombed Skyscraper). I was hooked right there. Really fun movie, but maybe lacking as a mystery. I loved the style so much - the epic trombone theme song and the kid detective on a rocket skateboard and everything. Conan had a lot of attitude back then.

Monster and Paranoia Agent sound right up your street. Darker than Black, Mushishi and Mononoke all might be worth checking out.

Gosick is okay I guess. If you're looking for a good Sherlock anime I hear Meitantei Holmes is good (it's done in the same style as Dogtanian, which is fantastic, and Hayao Miyazaki was involved with it).

Would second Paranoia Agent. Great series, directed by the late, great Kon Satoshi. Also, not quite as good as Paranoia Agent, but still a fairly dark and mysterious short series: Boogiepop Phantom. The overarching story to the two Ghost in the Shell SAC series are pretty detective-esque mystery. Maybe not what you're looking for, Zero, but great shows, if you haven't seen them.

Oh, yes. Watch Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex if you haven't. It's not a mystery you can solve before the characters can, but it's a fascinating ride in a fascinating world. Plus it's beautiful and has great action and all that too.

So I finished Trigun and absolutely loved every minute of it, and so I ordered Badlands Rumble. Also ordered the first set of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood since that one caught my eye too.

I finished Slayers Next this week. I think I liked it better than the first season. The humor is hitting me just right, which is rare these days, so I'm quite pleased.

I've read that the third season diverges from the original source material. I guess I'll see how that plays out once I get to it.

I love seeing Detective Conan love  It's one of my favorite animes of all time.

I'm currently going back through all my favorite childhood animes that I haven't watch in a long time.

Right now I am watching Dragonball and DBZ. I am about halfway through Dragonball.

After those, I'm gonna go through Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and then Case Closed/Detective Conan.

The only current anime I'm keeping up with is Naruto. I watch the new episodes and read the new manga every week.
