I'm fairly sure that Turrican one has a plasma sword thing that you can aim in pretty much any direction - you can even rotate it around and do a 360 sweep.Pulsar_t wrote:I found Megaman's lack of 8-directional shooting a turn-off. Is there a Megaman game that offers this? Difficulty isn't really that much of an issue for me.. but give me control dammit! Turrican is also a great series marred by lack of directional aim. I might be wrong about Super Turrican II though and I hope it has that feature.

If I recall correctly, in Mega Man & Bass, if you play as Bass you get an 8 way shot.Pulsar_t wrote:I found Megaman's lack of 8-directional shooting a turn-off. Also, Silent Hill has been elusive to me. There are 5 parts and I don't know where to start. I detest 32-bit 3D (ie PS) so I find it hard to start with the first game. The fact SH1 didn't come to the PC (unlike Resi1) didn't help. Heck it was a pain to go through MGS1 (after having completed both 2 and 3)

Right you are: Mega Man & Bass gives you the option to play as Bass, who can shoot in eight different directions, but it's really a different game if you play as Bass; multi-directional shooting just isn't part of the main design of the series (plus the double-tap-to-dash is intolerable to me; I want my Down + A!).MrPopo wrote:If I recall correctly, in Mega Man & Bass, if you play as Bass you get an 8 way shot.Pulsar_t wrote:I found Megaman's lack of 8-directional shooting a turn-off. Besides, the special weapons in the Mega Man games fire in different directions and patterns so that you don't have to fire just left or right all the time. Part of the fun is getting new weapons that do things that your normal blaster simply can't.
Of course, you could always play Mega Man 2 and go through most of the game just using the 8-directional Metal Blade...
Incidentally, Mega Man & Bass is also a good place to start, and it's easier to find than just about any other game in the classic series, and it's not in the Anniversary Collection.
Oh, and I felt the same way about Zelda: Ocarina of Time--all of the 3-D games I had ever played allowed me to jump at will and not automatically when I was running off the edge of a cliff, so I really missed that option... which is why I loved the Roc's Feather in Link's Awakening.

Totally forgot to mention the Mega Man games for Game Boy. You can find I and II just about anywhere that still sells old Game Boy games, and while they're not nearly as good as the games on which they were based, they're still pretty solid and serve as good introductions to the series. Good luck finding III-V, though (mostly because they're the best ones for the GB).the7k wrote:The hardest part for me isn't actually completing the games, it's just finding the games and after that, coughing up the money for them. Megaman 7 and 8 don't seem like they'd be a walk in the park to obtain either. I could just take the easy way out and get the Collection, but I'm weird like that.
pre-Final Fantasy VII series... should I get the original NES and SNES carts and let the nostalgia take hold? Or should I go for the collections on the PS1 so I can line them up perfectly with 7-9? Or should I get 'em for the GBA so I can play them on the go and on the Gamecube? Or should I just wait for FF5 and 6 to inevitably be remade on the DS?
I think you'd really need to investigate the Final Fantasy games on a case-by-case basis. Final Fantasy IV, for example, has been re-released several times, and what I hear about the DS version is that it's significantly different from the original. I'm no Final Fantasy expert, but I know that FFIV was one in particular that had some notable differences between the Japanese and English versions when it was released in the States as FFII. I suppose it really depends on whether you want "authentic" or "most jam-packed with goodies" or what.
Assuming the availability and price aren't a factor, I prefer to go for nostalgia unless the remake enhances the original rather than changes it. I understand that FFV for the GBA is one such example of a superior remake, though I haven't played any older versions to be able to back that up. Plus, if they release FFV for the DS, guaranteed that they're going to do some big changes, otherwise there wouldn't be much sense in re-releasing a game that's not quite two years old that you can already play on the DS.

I'm gonna go with Dragon Quest on this. I'm not very informed on the series (aside from the first one on the NES), but after reading that Dragon Quest VII on the PS1 'boasted' over 100 hours of gameplay, I knew I would never be able to play through such a game. That's just plain ridiculous, regardless if the game was good or not.
Actually, RPGs in general have begun to intimidate me lately. Being a grown-up with a family doesn't allow many chances for marathon gaming sessions. And with games that award 100% completions, I usually only make it to the 'first' ending.

Sakura Wars, always wanted to try it out but playing a text heavy rpg in japanese doesn't sound to appealing to me, but that columns game for the dc looks like it might be worth a shot
