One sitting recent-gen games?

Post by noiseredux »

Having recently played through Portal it got me thinking about how there are some truly amazing games that are pretty short. Some of which - like Portal (3-5 hrs?) or Journey (2 hrs) you could even play through in a single sitting. So while many retro games were certainly made to be beaten in a sitting, I'm curious about more recent stuff that can be played through in a short afternoon. (Obviously I'm not talking about arcade-style stuff like fighters or shmups).

excluding arcade style games, these come to mind:

Dear Esther
DLC Quest + Live Freemium or Die
Sound Shapes
Unfinished Swan
each episode of Sonic 4
Shatter
To the Moon

I think those are all 2-4 hours.

I think Hotline Miami would probably count. It took me about 4 hours.

I seem to recall it took me closer to 8-9 hours to do everything in that one

Well I was going to suggest shmups...

What about platformers? Some Wii games come to mind: New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Donkey Kong Country Returns....

Of course there are also the Metal Slug games, Super Princess Peach, Giana Sisters DS, Contra 4...

Lost in Shadow is also great, but takes a couple of sittings.

Ys I (PSP/DS) takes about 6 hours. 8)

I do dislike how so many modern "action games" take like 15 hours to complete.

yeah, this isn't really the stuff I'm curious about. I mean these are all (basically) sequels to NES/SNES games that could be beaten in a single sitting. There basically "new retro games." It's not surprising to me to know they're so short.

Yeah I thought of that... but again, it's not really a recent game. Just a remake of a TG16 game.

Not one sitting, but plenty of games like Heavy Rain, Silent Hill 2, Ico, come to mind that will take under 10 hrs.

Fair enough.

How about MadWorld on Wii?

I'm surprised dsheinem didn't mention that already.

Vanquish is another solid game as well.

Only game I've played through in one sitting in recent memory is Portal.

Easily GOTY 2009.

ninja'd, was going to mention this as well. Should run about 5-6 hours on a first run, it's pretty much 100% action with zero filler.
