I don't really know why people still care about DVD and Blu Ray playback. Well especially DVD playback anyways. I don't need a 400th DVD player and I already have a Blu Ray player.
As for achievements, I've never cared for them, but I do think Nintendo should have them. People can get a lot of enjoyment and replay value out of games trying to get them.
Because then I could have a single machine under my TV instead of 2.
Maybe it's a patent thing? Who knows.

Exactly. If you don't care for them, then you're good either way. But if you like them, it sucks when they're not there. And they do totally half-ass it on games like NSMBU with the "passed without taking damage" and "passed with 3 coins" miiverse/whatever thing they do. A game like that could have awesome achievements like "never touch the ground", and other difficult platforming achievements.
noiseredux wrote:I wonder why Ninty is so against achievements?
I think that they tried to integrate an achievement with the MiiVerse, albeit very strangely. With New Super Mario Bros. U, it asks if you want to post an accomplishment (getting all the star coins, finishing without getting hurt etc.) on the boards. I think that is the direction they want to go. I think they see achievements as an act you want to share with a community instead of just hoarding for personal self worth.
I wish that they had more clear-cut achievements like the competition to help give me some goals to do after the game is done (something I did with Saints Row the Third which I loved!).
I don't know, I kind of enjoy the integration of the Miiverse in the games more than achievements. I like socializing with people and sharing my experiences. Playing Zombi U was even more fun when interacting with other people, posting up pictures, asking for questions and tips, as well as bragging.

You can still play the game that way you know? You don't need a virtual trophy for everything you do in the game.

I think the including a Bluray player is important just for the convenience , You really do not want some one to say "A 2013 console that does not have a 6 year old technology, am not paying $350 for that" . Its one of these things that is not going to sell the console (lets be honest, a Bluray capability was not going to sell more WiiUs) but once you take it out it will be a negative against the console because "the 2 other competing consoles has it" .
Out of topic, but I think Bluray is selling very slow. Download media is where it is now, what makes me sad is that I do not want to see a day where we can not own video physically.
How is the online multiplayer on WiiU?
There was a lot of negative talk about it on the Wii with it have some sort of complex long serial numbers.
@Cornozilla
I can see your points about Nintendo being financially aware. As I said, if the WiiU does not sell 1 more console it is not going to bring Nintendo down. I was thinking long term here , 10 years or more in the future. This sort of thing where the "King" of a market goes down happens a lot unless it starts to innovate . Its happening with Blackberry now , It happened with Atari, it happened with Blockbuster , its happening with Dell , the list continues . All I see is that Nintendo keeps releasing same titles basically for the last decade or 2 and I do not see that serving them well in the future. Hence why I started by saying they need to change strategy .
In the end this is all speculation , for some reason maybe in the next 2 years games like Call of Duty and such will be forgotten like point-and-click and platformers like Mario will be all the rage like its the early 90's all over again making Nintendo sell titles like Donkey-Kong, Mario Bros, Mario 3D, Kirby, and Yoshi.

To be fair, the challenge mode is full of exactly this kinda stuff.
And some Nintendo games are full of this type of challenge. Not Wii U examples, but Smash Bros Brawl, Kirbys Air Ride and Kid Icarus Uprising had challenge walls with hundreds of achievements to get. I guess Sakurai likes giving you stuff to do.
I don't know much about it, but I hear theres a lot of challenges to complete in the new Mario & Luigi game for 3DS too.

Not much different than the other consoles. You have Nintendo Network ID and you add other ID's to your friend list. I've played a little of Black Ops II on the system for a while and it felt more or less the same as my experience on PS3.

Does it use the controller in any meaningful way?

I personally do not use my consoles to run DVDs or Blue Ray to save on the total run time mileage, a dedicated player has better features anyways. That stated, the WiiU and even the Wii could have added DVD movie compatibility as a selling feature.
Agree, I hate the prospect of not having a permanent copy of a movie with all the extra Special Features that streaming movies usually do not have. The Digital Copy and Ultra Violet are a joke due to only good for a limited time offer. I would rather have my money spent on extra features placed in the disc. BlueRay and sometimes even DVD now have streaming of additional content online. This can be a plus to see more, a big negative when the additional online footage goes away in a couple of years.

I'm not sure about single player as I haven't cared about CoD campaign in years. But for multiplayer you can use it to control certain kill streaks. It was also fun to play with my brother together online with one of us using the TV and another using the gamepad screen.
I bought it because it was cheap and I wanted to play around with the Wii remote aiming. I quickly learned that I was terrible at it and too stubborn to try and relearn how to play CoD. Went back to using the Pro controller before trading it in to GameStop for more than I bought it for. Some people out there are amazing with the pointer controls, I'll say that!
