I was a little confused with the Sega Genesis for model II on this guide. I always thought the best non-modded output would be the standard AV (Red, white, and yellow cable).

But it looks like you could use RGB unmodded? I'm guessing it requires some converter box that does for around 40-50 dollars?

Awesome guide btw!
Same here, which is why I wrote the guide this way.

Yes, for most Americans, composite is the best you're gonna get without expensive hardware, but then this wouldn't be "Best Video Connections", would it? :3

I just made this as an absolute reference for best, one day I might expand it a bit to cover all possible outputs from a console. Or more realistically, all unmodded outputs, and then the best mods.
it's a great guide. And I'm glad you made this. Really helps me out.

only minor suggestion I have is including the best "quick cable/cord" (u could probably find better wording). This would be the best output connections that only require buying one cord that don't require boot discs or converter boxes for non nodded consoles. And add a note if a certain region requires extra hardware for a better native and unmodded output.

I might consider getting scart on a Genesis if I can use the same converter box for a Saturn.

My Cypress CSY-2100 handled all my SCART capable devices except my SNES (bad cable) just fine. The Saturn and all my Genesis models looked fantastic on my Sony wega CRT through component. It was the cheapest SCART to YUV transcoder when I bought it. I needed to buy a breakout box to get sound (around $4), but if you buy cables with breakout RCA audio from Retro Console Accessories you're all set with that transcoder.

I ended up modding the CSY-2100:

The CSY-2100 is currently handling the PS1 output to my XRGB-3 because it doesn't like the mode switches in Castlevania:SOTN with the settings I like for it's output.

I think you can just get an RGB SCART cable, right?

Yes, that's right. A SCART cable for your model (get the right one) will make an awesomely good picture out of any unmodded Genesis. Put it thrugh a SCART to YUV Transcoder and it's perfect...But remember;

The list order of video signals is missing S-Video.

You're welcome! Hey, are you going to include other sub-consoles like handhelds (through TV-Out or a console adapter) and Plug n Plays?

Plug n Plays, generally only support composite, and are low-quality SoaC cheap crap, so no. I very much doubt anyone using them would care too much about video quality anyway. I have to draw the line somewhere on what qualifies as a console, or this guide would quickly become unmanageable. I mean, I love my Raspberry Pi for emulation, but it's a guilty pleasure, quick-fix for gaming, not something I'll spend hours on in front of the TV.

As far as handhelds go, I hadn't thought about that. IIRC, the Game Gear has a mod for RGB out...

I'm not sure, I'll think about it. My main problem is that almost all of them only support the most basic of outputs stock, and the mods are usually extensive, expensive, and done only once as a PoC sort of deal. In short, handhelds aren't usually designed for high-quality output, so adding them to a guide about high-quality output seems kind of silly. But I've been working on a fairly sizable update to the guide the past few days, so, I might see if I can wriggle that in. Thanks for the suggestions!

Handhelds TV Out that comes to mind are...

GB/GBC/GBA = SNES/Super Game Boy or Super Game Boy 2, NGC/Game Boy Player, etc.
NGPC = Neo Geo/Super Neo Geo Pocket (Black and white only)
DS = Composite out through an adapter

Also, did the first Xbox have the ability to use Component at 720p?
