Here's a good RGT --

I dusted off the SNES for Contra III tonight, and I saw that black border on the top of the screen with the score and information, which I always notice is present on many SNES games (mainly side-scrolling games) that have that whenever a stage with rotation is being played. At any other time in these examples, there is no black border anywhere else in the games where rotation isn't happening.

Video of that (easily seen on Stage 2 and Stage 5) -

Notice this black border that goes over the score/information again, in Super Ghouls & Ghosts on Stage 4, another rotation heavy area -

Even Super Castlevania IV has the same thing in Stage 4-2 (starting at 1:55) -

Now why does this happen during areas with rotation? Is it a technical limitation of the SNES hardware?

Possibly? I've never heard about it.

It could just be an aesthetic thing though. With the stage moving and turning about you wouldnt know what would be behind the information up top at all times and it could make it hard to read at times. Putting it in a static box like that could help it to be clearly read.

I'd say it probably is hardware related though tbh.

I don't nkow a lot about SNES hardware specifically, but my guess is that it has something to do with the background layers and graphics modes. They're probably having to switch drawing mode mid-screen draw or something to enable the mode 7 stuff.

That's another reason I originally thought of, just to not disorient the player so much.

I like this explanation, it makes quite a bit of sense. I remember seeing something like this on a SNES emulator (ZSNES) that lets you remove individual background layers and back when I used that a lot removing that layer in a rotation area would take the score/information completely away along with the portion of the screen that would take up, leaving just the main game behind.

A lot of games use those sorts of mid-screen interrupts to do stuff. Pretty much every NES game that scrolls and has a static status bar does this for example.

So I picked up Tony Hawk's Underground the other day with some other PS2 games.

When I started playing it, at first I was like, "WTF? This is the dumbest shit ever! Cars? Really? No Parks?!"

But then I gave it a chance and its a truly amazing game, the story, gameplay, graphics, are all great. The rumble feature on the grinds is amazing, (especially cause I also picked up a Nyko Viper2 with amazing rumble) its one of those little things that really make me like a game.

Ooh, tempting. If they drop the price to $40 I'll certainly buy it.
