Along with a reset button fix, if I were to get a Japanese region mod on a Model 2 Genesis, would I still be able to play my American games? Just a rough estimate on costs (if i were to pay shipping both ways and parts and labor)?
Yes. It's usually a toggle switch. The console's actual region changes when on.
Unlike using Game Genie or similar to bypass mode.

Various games will display Japanese text.
Flicky, Mystic Defender, Fatal Labyrinth, Ghostbusters, Quackshot, Cloud Master, Knuckles Chaotix...

Also lets JP Mega CD hardware work (in my opinion not worth the steep postage).

finally found a seller selling one. good price too. only problem is there is no ac adapter, so i have to find one separately.

Instead of using the original AC adapters, have you guys experienced any problems with using third party ac adapters like these:

I read that it is important for the sega genesis to have "clean power". but the third party adapters are cheaper and you can get them newer. original ones are more expensive and are usually used heavily.

I've never used those before, but they should work.

Genesis 2 plugs are somewhat common, if you know how to look for them.

Get pics of them online to familiarize yourself with them.

Whenever you go on the hunt for gaming stuffs, look for yellow tipped plugs.

You could get lucky and pull out a Genesis plug from that big box of wires.

These same plugs also work well with game gears.

Finally found a VA4 and ordered it. Got an AC with it too, 3rd party 6 button controller. Under 35 bucks all together. Not a gem find, but pretty decent.

Finally got it.

The AV cable I got was only the White and Yellow cables. Is there a difference with the Yellow, White, and Red cables?

Red cable adds stereo.

Frankly, Genesis composite isn't very good.
But like SMS1 and Neo Geo its AV out has RGB instead of s-video.

I noticed. Picture sux on my HDTV CRT. So dark (this tv is about to give up on me too). I was playing on a genesis 3 on my cousins SDTV and it looked fine.

Strongly considering buying scart cables with a converter box if I finally get a Saturn soon so I can use scart on my genesis and Saturn.

Any tips and tricks to get rid of console oders? This thing stinks.

I'm going to take it a part and clean everything. Is that all I can pretty much do?

When I get a dirty console, I take it apart and put the parts in the dishwasher, all except the PCBs and when there are stickers I do not want to damage. I clean dirty PCB with isopropyl alcohol and old toothbrush.
