Can I skip more than one generation?

Are you talking direct ports or do remakes also count?

If we're talkin' remakes then Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI all qualify.

Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure was on PS1 and then the DS.

I was going to go to my old stand-by: Ys Book I & II... turns out it goes from generation 3 to 7 without skipping any!

Ys III, on the other hand, does skip generation five. Goes from SNES/Genesis/Turbo CD to PS2.

Super Mario 64 DS is the only one I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned.

Here are some more that I thought of last night:

Castlevania (NES/X68000) ---> Castlevania Chronicles (PS1)
I think the Sharp X68000 is technically considered 4th gen - it was 16-bit.

Castlevania is on the Amiga as well.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but Windwaker has a generational gap in between it.

Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 were also ported to the GC.

A Link to the Past skipped a gen as well.

Final Fantasy I & II jumped from NES/MSX to WonderSwan Color/PS1. No 16-bit releases.

Final Fantasy III jumped from NES to DS/PSP!

Xanadu went from PC-88/MSX/FM-7 (8-bit computers) to the Saturn.

Sorcerian had the requisite 8-bit computer versions, then was ported to Mega Drive/PC Engine CD, and then to Dreamcast (no 5th gen).

I think we can count digital games as long as they are not just an emulated version of the original game (such as the games on the Virtual Console). In other words, Guardian Heroes (SAT/360) would count because it is a port/remake of the original game. Earthbound (SNES/WiiU) would not count, however, because the WiiU version is simply an emulated version of the SNES original with a few bonuses.

Definitely!

You have to skip at least one, however!

Ports and remakes are both fine.

Blast! I tried. You learn something every day, however, which is the point of this thread.

Also...you are all naming some games I never considered, and I hope that you are all enjoying this exercise. I think it is interesting finding out which games are so revered that they merited stand alone ports/remakes many years after their initial release.

Technically the DOS version of Three Stooges would be 16 bit.

Phantasy Star 1-4 all skipped gens, some more than others. I suppose with compilations a lot of the Genesis games would be included, but even excluding it you can play Phantasty Star 2 on IOS.
