Technically, it has a Blu-ray drive.ZeroAX wrote:ouch.....wait, the Wii U doesn't have achievements? :S.....what about DVD support?
Actually supporting DVD or Blu-ray playback would require paying licensing fees to the appropriate consortiums. Nintendo doesn't want to add to their costs to do that, so, it can't play them, just like the Wii didn't have DVD playback.

Exactly. I would have picked this up months ago but in September there is no chance. I am not really a fan of the series anyhow.ZeroAX wrote:. Ubisoft will get what it deserves when it fails to sell cause of an overcrowded release schedule....even the Wii U is getting many big games now, which leaves Wii U owners with less money to spend on Rayman.

seriously nintendo, at least release an app for that. I'm willing to pay 10 fucking $ for an extra blue ray player.
And really, they could have picked a cheaper but more powerful processor and gave us blue-ray support too, but who knows what goes on in their minds.

DVD would be even less these days. Based on PC costs, it'd be something like $3-4 per, so a $5.00 download would cover it with profit (just guessing).
But, that's also the reason that the X-Box required the remote kit for DVD playback. At the time, the player license was $15-20 I think, so they offset it with that.
Of note, it's also the reason Windows 8 dropped built-in DVD support

No way to have a digital download to cover the license? Like pay $10 - $15 for BD/DVD playback. Would be worth it to some people.
