Since it seems a lot of the comments take issue with this, I’ll address that I did indeed go back and play the original as a point of comparison. Like I say in the review, it has not aged well and most of the issues I had with the gameplay of the new version exist in the NES version. But if you’ve played the NES version recently and still love it, you’ll probably enjoy this.

Yeah, that Polygon review is pretty biased. Here's a post in the comments by the author.

I really tend to ignore reviews most of the time, but seeing this one have such a mixed reception makes me go "hmmm..."
I'll wait for some impressions by you guys before I decide. Lol

Edge and EG gave it 5/10, which is about average. After all it's an old-fashioned platformer we're talking about here.

Was there a need to make this game obnoxious? As much as I love the Gameboy and NES versions, I no longer have any interest in the remastered version.

Dialogue overload. Does it really pause the gameplay every time he picks something up and has to spew forth some useless tidbit? Awwww.

Re: Capcom announces new Duck Tales game, made by wayforward
Yeah wow all of that cutscene overload is totally unnecessary.

It's lost its charm. It's not that it is too polished, it's that it isn't Duck Tales (it is, ,but it isn't). I also prefer the "8-bit" music over the new soundtrack.
Bionic Commando Re-armed wasn't the same game either, but it looked, sounded, and felt like Bionic Commando.
Shame on Capcom.

It's hard to know how to take the scores. On the one hand, it's a retro game. Those ALWAYS get mixed reactions from critics since a lot of them are these new generation, younger folk with no appreciation for or understanding of the games we grew up on. Or they're just older guys who've murdered their inner children
On the other hand, it's a Wayforward title, and they are rather hit and miss. You have the Shantae games that are fantastic, but then you have something rather disappointing like Bloodrayne Betrayal. Then you have middle of the road games like Double Dragon Neon, which is fun and entertaining, but has fairly shallow gameplay even by beat 'em up standards.

That good to hear. These guys' tastes seem to line right up with my own.
