Ports that Skipped a Generation

Post by prfsnl_gmr »

I noticed the other day that the game Gem Smashers is available for both the Gameboy Advance and the Nintendo 3DS:

It is not, however, available for the Nintendo DS.

.....

Likewise, The Three Stooges is available for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sony Playstation:

It is not, however, available for any 16-bit console.

.....

Finally, Klonoa is available for the Sony Playstation and Nintendo Wii:

...but it was not released for the Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Gamecube, or Sony Playstation 2.

.....

Since I love video game trivia - and since the members of this forum have an abundance of this sort of knowledge - I am curious as to whether there are any other ports that "skipped a generation".

If you know of any, please list them here! (Excluding compilations...I do not expect there to be many...)

Don't be too sure about Klonoa. Or do sequels not count?

are any of those ports of the same basic game, or just an IP? I seem to think maybe Klonoa was an upgraded port, but I think the others are significantly different games with the same title. Klonoa also had a PS2 sequel to the PS1 game, of course.

Klonoa 2 was a sequel to the original game, however. Klonoa for the Wii is pretty much a straight port of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile for the PS1.

I am not looking for sequels here. Rather, I am looking for games that were ported to a system one generation removed from the original version.

Apologies for the double post...

Gem Smashers on the GBA is pretty much the same game as the 3DS version. (I have both.) Moreover, the NES version of The Three Stooges is - as far as I can tell - the same as the PS1 version. Accordingly, I am talking about ports here. I will change the title of the thread to avoid confusion, however.

Star Fox 64 3D

Would Ocarina of Time count since it is technically a remake?

Chrono Trigger skipped a gen I'm pretty sure. PSX had a port, then it skipped to DS.

I think that Starfox 64 and LoZ: Ocarina of Time 3D fit, but I am not sure about Chrono Trigger since it was ported to the PS1.

Here are some more that I thought of last night:

Castlevania (NES/X68000) ---> Castlevania Chronicles (PS1)

Castlevania: Dracula X (TG16/SNES) ---> Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles (PSP)

Ghosts 'n Goblins (ARC) ---> Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins (PSP)

Guardian Heroes (SAT) ---> Guardian Heroes (360)

Mega Man (NES) ---> Mega Man Powered Up (PSP)

Mega Man X (SNES) ---> Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (PSP)

The PSX and DS are a generation apart though (PS2/GC/GBA are between them), unless this thread is just for initial ports.

Sounds good! Let's count it.

(The rules here are not too strict...I am just trying to obtain some interesting video game trivia.)

Hm, would DLCs count? Games like Earthbound, Guardian Heroes etc can be found on Virtual Console, Xboxlive and what not and no where in between that.
