Just wanted to post that I am getting a Wii U.... Today!
Plan on picking up AC3 (never played it), NSMBU, and Lego City Undercover. I'm also interested in pikmin 3, monster hunter, etc but the budget will only stretch so far at the moment.
I'm super stoked!

I bought ACIII and didn't get into it at all. It was probably the wrong place to start in the series though. I had never played an Assassin's Creed game before.
NSMBU is awesome. It's my favourite game in the New Super Mario Bros series.

I agree with you. The controls are hard to use (at first), and the demo pretty much throws you to the wolves. I played on "normal", which I guess is "hard"? I am excited for the full game.Reprise wrote:So has anyone tried to the Wonderful 101 demo yet? After playing it, I'm really glad I pre-ordered it. I can't wait for its release. It's hard to used to the controls, but after a short while you really get engrossed into the game. It's really fun and creative.
The graphics are interesting. Everything is small and zoomed out, and then all of a sudden a giant robotic tank appears and fills the whole screen.

Indeed, exactly what I love about it (particularly the part I bolded).Lazer wrote:I agree with you. The controls are hard to use (at first), and the demo pretty much throws you to the wolves. I would also throw in Bayonetta or Devil May Cry as well in that mix because you can really feel the combat system's rhythm. I played around with it and it has been a blast. There is a lot of stuff going on that you don't necessarily know about, or know you can do unless you play around with the system.Lazer wrote:

For instance, you can convert enemies into allies of your team by knocking them unconscious and circling them. Also how enemies react when being block, dodged etc are really interesting and unique based on the enemy. With the tank in particular, when blocking its charge attack, you can knock it over and attack, or you can deflect its cannon into knocking the shield off.
With just the three power we have access to, you can get a sense to the depth each power has. Did you know the gun power can suck up projectiles and shoot them ala Luigi's Mansion? Also, sending your team out to use the other powers in unison with your own really creates an awesome dynamic to the playfield.
I am dead set on this game after playing that demo.
Word to the wise, I highly suggest using the right thumb stick to activate powers. It is a lot easier to pull off and keeps your attention on the tv screen instead of on the pad.

You make a sound argument , but business don't insist on doing something until they are all out money. Once they realize that they are not going to make a profit they stop doing it. They start doing something else or concentrate where they make most of their profits.Cronozilla wrote:I think the reality is Nintendo could fail in the next five+ console generations and still wouldn't have to shut down. ~$20 Billion goes a long way when your "failures" only cost $300 Million. If the losses went up $100 Million every console generation after four generations of Wii U's current performance ... they'd still have at least ~$18 Billion.
No, they're not out until consoles don't exist anymore (and even then they'll do something else, like their own line of devices) or until a person who doesn't care is in charge (usually how companies die)
Sony and Microsoft continue to invest in the console market even if they lose money because the console is really a complementary item to their other businesses. Like Sony made Bluray succeed by pushing it into the ps3 and selling their music and movie services, and Microsoft want to expand their MSN/Outlook accounts users , their Bing search engine. Nintendo on the other hand , has only the videogame business to make profit on.
Plus I think your $300 lost investment on any failed console is a bit low. I heard Shenmue had a cost of like $70m and thats just one game in 2000, so I think $300m for a full console in 2013 is a bit low.

Shenmue was one of the most expensive games ever, though... Not a good example.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Lets keep a couple things in mind ... I was responding to the fact that you said if Nintendo has hardware that performs like Wii U next generation, they'll leave the hardware market. I was pointing out that ... the Wii U could be a miserable failure, worse performance than Virtual Boy and the system after that could perform the same and that still wouldn't happen due to the amount of finances they have and the structure of the company ... seeing as it's a video game company. They'd likely go a different direction with video game hardware ... but they're not going to stop making it all together.
The $300 Million figure is from Nintendo themselves. It was their only posted loss and it happened in the 6 months the Wii U came out. It was the only net loss posted for the company in 30 years. And it likely was because of currency exchange issues, as opposed to sales.
The sum of all this is: the doom and gloom that Nintendo will pull a Sega (A company, which, at it's most valuable, was 1/5th the net worth of Nintendo) and will exit the console business for good ... is just horseshit. Their losses aren't remotely anything near detrimental, they're signs that things need to go better, but they aren't the trumpets signaling the apocalypse.
There's also one enormous difference between Nintendo and Sega and Nintendo and Atari. Nintendo is fiscally responsible. Sega was absolutely not, neither was Atari. They threw money out the window like it was confetti. And neither had to actually fail or quit, they just needed to do something different than making the same mistakes over and over and over again, but they didn't. Nintendo, clearly makes decisions based on a variety of factors, one of which is financial responsibility of their company. Their longevity as a video game company, and their perpetual ability to stay profitable is proof of that. I think the only way that'd change for Nintendo is if what happens to every company that suddenly plummets happens to them, and that's some random business associate gets control of the company. But that seems unlikely.

Yep, I played it. Love what I've seen so far.Lazer wrote:Yes! At first I was overwhelmed by the controls/number of things on screen/speed but I slowly got better - it has a nice little learning curve. And it's really fun. Week 1 purchase for me, fo sho.jay_red wrote:anyone grab the wonderful 101 demo today? I played it earlier today and enjoyed it. It takes a bit to get used to, the controls are pretty complex with a lot of different mechanics to use. its very fast paced, but I was not a fan of how far the camera would have to zoom out sometimes. The demo is also pretty long, giving you a good amount of time to get used to the game.
The Wonderful 101 will be released on Sept. 15th.
It's actually a bit more complex than I imagined. It will probably be quite a challenging game too.

I actually didn't know you could multiple unite morphs active at once. Another layer if strategy to contend with there.

That new Director's Cut trailer actually showed more of a story than I imagined there would be too. I'm definitely excited for the full game.
