SCHOOL UNIFORMS: Yay or Nay?

As a parent of a child who must wear a school uniform, I think it is great. I buy five shirts and she is set for the year. I think I spent about $120 on six school shirts this year (one got ruined) and who knows how much money it saved me in other clothes. It also makes it extremely easy to choose what to wear. It is also easy to wash, since they are all the same fabric, just two different colours.

I'm speaking from a students perspective as i'm still in high school. I clothes give a sense of individualism.

Does Apple also make your clothes and correct your spelling errors? I kid, but I don't.

I don't think uniforms would have much a difference on U.S. kids. But I say Yey to them, it might actually solve a lot of problems. As long as they are provided free by the school system.

And maybe that worked well for you, but that doesn't mean it will and should work for everyone. .

If you ask one hundred K-12 teachers I would put a few hundred on that at the very least baker's dozen would answey "yay or nay" with "I say some should be chained to their desk".

I push that to twenty percent giving the curve of violence in schools.



We're talking about kids who eat boogers, leave shit stains in their undies, and think cafeteria pizza is epic. "Expressing" themselves usually means they are being dorks on the loose.

The fact that uniforms make kids think "I could be any one of these guys/gals" is neat.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Your perception of modern children and of the role of both school and parenting is, to my mind, a bit skewed...

In any case, can you at least agree that uniforms aren't a good or useful idea in every schooling context, just as I've admitted they aren't an inherently poor or damaging idea in every schooling context? I think "yay or nay" is far too reductionist. I'd much rather look at specific cases and determine the pros and cons for uniforms as they apply to specific groups of students in particular schools.

In my school your not allowed to wear hats because they think that kids use them to make cliques and rep gangs. The funny thing is I live predominantly white, upper-middle class neighborhood.

My school, by comparison to others in the area, is pretty strict about dress code. We can't wear hats because its rude to wear hats inside, no other real reason.

Besides that, no bandannas. Supposed gang affiliations. I think we have a really fair policy though. No holes allowed in clothing unless below the knee in pants, no yoga pants/spandex, all skirts/shorts for girls must be at least within a dollar bill length of the knee, thumbs in armpits for cleavage rules, all straps on shirts for girls must be at least three fingers wide for girls, no tank tops on boys, no face jewelry excluding earrings, and hair must be a natural color. Also, no racist/gang affiliated showings on clothing.

kinda off topic but I hear that In Texas they teach abstinence instead of safe sex. Is that true and If so how do the classes go.

They teach abstinence, essentially saying you should wait to avoid STD's/Pregnancy. Lots of scare tactics, by straight up showing pictures of diseased genitalia. The argument in essentially that if you do have sex, use a condom. But its probably best if you wait 'till marriage.*

*Their words, not mine. 'Course, I'd probably have to be married to get any anyways.

Is there some one measuring these things? Will a teacher take a dollar bill and send you home if your skirt is shorter than that?
I've only gone to a public school so I've never even heard of such weird regulations. I mean who uses dollar bills and finger lengths to measure things? Why are the rules so specific? I don't really care if they had a super strict protocol back when I went to school, but to me it sounds really weird that students can wear what hey want, PROVIDED IT'S AT LEAST WITHIN A DOLLAR BILL LENGTH OF THE KNEE

Although one time on 3rd or 4th grade I remember one kid got sent to home to change his clothes when it was like 9 or 10 degrees celsius and he was wearing a t-shirt and shorts

This one seems quite strict, considering how popular hair coloring is amongst teenage girls. What's the age bracket of your school?
