Getting smells out

The PS3 is pretty easy to open if you have the slim or original fatty, never tried a super slim. There are plenty of guides out there with pics that would be more beneficial to you than me typing it out.

Actually I'v tried my hand at looking and I can't find any good ones and when I looked around I found tons of forums all arguing about how to open it up/clean it. People said canned air hurts it, others said vaccums hurt it, some said don't even open it. It's all confusing and scary...everyone saying this that and the other thing will hurt the PS3.

Oh and I have the fat one...the one people call a piano? idk why...

If you do open it and go at it with canned air, resist the temptation to make whizzing sounds with the fan. In fact hold the fan still while you blow at it. The canned air will spin it much faster than the bearings can handle and your fan will be that much closer to death.

Ah....hm I wonder if the same hold true to PC fans...since I never hold mine still when I blow the dust out.

You don't need to do a full tear down so just stop when you can clean it out well/no long feel comfortable continuing.

Ignore all the blah arguing, canned air is safe. Vacuuming is slightly less safe but like I said don't use a super strong one and you'll be fine. You just want to move dust not pick up a bowling ball.

I assume they call it the piano because the official color is "Piano Black"

With canned air, I already mentioned the fan thing. You want to not blow dust further into places you can't get it back out. With vacuums there can be static electricity buildup and you could zap something if you're not careful. Also with either it is possible to blow stuff off the board too. Don't put the canned air right on stuff and as said, don't use a shop vac as those suck much harder.

Actually, if you have a small paintbrush, use that to loosen dust first, then go at it.

I bought a few PlayStation games from someone on eBay and they arrived with cigarette smell. At first, it stunk up my whole bedroom. The case and CD seem not too bad, but the manuals are terrible.

I don't have dryer sheets around because I hate that smell. Maybe I will try baking soda.

Well I might have to try baking soda as well now...I checked the boxes and while they smell much better, there's still a faint aura of smoke. I stuck fresh sheets in each of the boxes and closed them up, then sealed the tub. Hopefully a sheet for each box will get the smell out.

Hobie-wan is pretty spot on with the advice about cleaning electronics. So my advice is just an addition to his. I was a PC repair tech for a few years so I wanted to corroborate and add to stuff he said.

Yes hold the fans when you spray them with canned air. You can over spin them which shortens their life.

My addition is DON'T SHAKE THE CAN. People who had problems after using canned air almost assuredly shook the can which leaves a liquid film of the cans chemicals on the circuit board. If you do that and don't leave it for a few hours to dry it can short out the board and fry your gear when you power it on.

Shaking a can of air does not give it more pressure it just releases the chemical liquid that creates the air pressure.

This isn't hugely related to gaming but I found a small bookshelf down in the basement which I think is the perfect size to hold boxed games. I cleaned it up with some sort of cleanser, but the damn thing smells musty. I tried spraying it with febreze in the hopes it would mask the smell but it's not working.

I don't want to put my boxes on it only to have them soak up that musty smell. Even more so since I just got done getting the cigarette smell out of them.

What do you think I should try on it to get that smell out?

Could put some contact paper on the surfaces that will touch the games. If the other edges are open they'll probably breathe and air out.

Hm...other then the very top shelf all of the other ones are enclosed, so idk how much air they will get.

Really I just want to get the smell out because it's starting to smell up the corner I put it in.

If the bookshelf smells that musty, where it is stinking up the corner, there probably isn't a way to save it. Likely being in a basement means that it has all kinds of mold and such growing in that wood, that would be the musky smell.
