Are there any old-school game series that you would like to try sometime, but have been intimidated by or not sure which installment to try first?
Just curious....

I wanted to get into the original Ys, but I ended up with the recent entries instead. The Final Fantasies as well.

The nice thing about Final Fantasy is you can play them in any order since the stories are usually not sequels so there's no chance of missing what's going on. (And the couple sequel/spinoffs, I don't even recommend playing. Except Tactics, and that's not a sequel.)
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

Ys, dragonquest or sukioden (sp). All of them have so many iterations, and take way too much to get into.
Consoles Owned: Nintendo SNES, Nintendo GameBoy Color, Nintendo GBA, Sony PSX, PS2, PS3, Sega Master, Microsoft XBox

One thing I hate about FF, and I've only learned of this recently, is the International re-releases they get. Basically, these are enhanced versions of the game that only come out in Japan like six or twelve months after the North American release. Some of them, like FF X 2 International, have a lot of substantial extra content. A lot of changes and tweaks are made to the International versions too. Essentially, if you're from North America, Square doesn't give a shit about you and will pawn off their crap version of the game on us, while giving the Japanese fans a far superior version only a couple months to a year later. They've been doing with the Kingdom Hearts series too.PhilExile wrote:Final Fantasy! There are a zillion variations if you count the various remakes and re-issues...
It pissed me off when I found out because I realized that all those hours I sunk into my FF games, were being put into inferior versions of the game. The fact that these International versions don't come out in states is especially annoying because it means that if you did buy the original release and sunk lots of hours into it, you'll have to start from scratch if you import the international versions. Now if Square released the international versions here, we could simply import our data, but that's not the case
Personally, I'm sick of enhanced ports too. Resident Evil 4 came out on the PS 2 with new content, then came out on the Wii with better visuals and a more powerful P.R.L. weapon. Bioshock got re-released on the PS3 with extra content. Disgaea got a PSP port with a new Etna mode and some other stuff, and they just released ANOTHER port on the Nintendo DS with MORE extra stuff. Metal Gear Solid 3 came out with a shitty camera and no Soliton radar, then they brought out the Substance version with a proper third person camera.
My advice to everyone on this board is to never buy a popular game until at least two years have gone buy. Let the greedy, bastard companies release two, or three or however many versions of a game they want, then you can pick the best one and only have to buy the damn thing ONCE

A lot of RPG series intimidate me. There are so many interesting RPGs I want to play like Earthbound and Sweet Home but I'm always afraid I'll get bored or frustrated with it before I can play through it.

For me it's the megaman and castlevania series. I've had preconceived notions about their difficulty since my early childhood in the NES days.

megaman. they are so damn hard.
