What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - There have been two FMA series. The first one was done while the manga was still in the earlier stages, and branches off into a second half (at least) that was made up to give the series an ending. Years later, as the manga was coming to a close, they made Brotherhood, which follows the manga faithfully to the end. While both are good, Brotherhood is better.

I honestly 100% enjoyed the original FMA way better. The story was much more solid as were the characters.

The first FMA was awesome, but your opinion of it is objectively wrong.

Too bad Chiaki Omigawa (Maka) pierces ear drums with her voice.

Worst and most annoying voice actor I've ever heard by far, holy crap. I almost want to drop newer shows I hear her in lately, no matter how small her role might be, it's instant chaos to my ears the second I hear that voice. Forks screeching across a plate!

I'm currently on the 6th episode of the 2nd season of Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings. It's currently available on Netflix with both the subbed and the dubbed versions. So far, I got to say that this is one of the best VG-based anime I've watched in recent times. PUT YA GUNS ON!

Sword Art Online is another great anime to catch. Its definitely one of my favorites. Its kind of like .hack// but with more action .

It's on Toonami too! You only have to catch up on two episodes if you want to watch it on there.

I watched the complete series subbed online haven't checked out the dubbed version yet. Really I can hardly stand dubbed anime anymore the original voice acting is usually so much better and after watching a few thousand hours of subbed anime you hardly notice the subtitles anymore .

Rejoice Bandai fans! Funimation and Sentai Filmworks have picked up many former Bandai released titles for distribution.

North American anime distributor FUNimation Entertainment announced at its panel at Otakon on Saturday that it will release Shinichiro Watanabe and Sunrise's Cowboy Bebop television anime series digitally and on Blu-ray Disc for the first time in North America. Funimation plans to release the series in 2014. Additionally, the company announced that it has licensed the following titles that Bandai Entertainment had previously licensed:

Outlaw Star
Escaflowne: The Movie
The Vision of Escaflowne
My-HiME
My-Otome
My-Otome 0~S.ifr~
My-Otome Zwei

Sunrise producer Masayuki Ozaki had revealed in May that the company was in talks with Sentai Filmworks and Funimation to distribute former Bandai Entertainment titles.

Sunrise had announced earlier in the day that Funimation has also licensed the following titles that Bandai Entertainment had previously released in North America: Tales of the Abyss, Witch Hunter Robin, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, Angel Links, Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars, Banner of the Stars II, and Passage of the Stars - Birth. Sunrise also announced that Funimation has the Code Geass: Akito the Exiled video anime series.

Funimation also announced that it has licensed the rest of the Fairy Tail television anime that is currently in existence (up to episode 175), and revealed that Wolf Children will ship on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on November 12.

Sunrise announced at its panel at Otakon on Saturday that Sentai Filmworks has licensed the following Sunrise titles:

The Big O
The Big O II
Argento Soma
Betterman
s-CRY-ed
Z-Mind
Zegapain
The Girl Who Leapt Through Space
Infinite Ryvius
Kurokami The Animation

I don't know about the rest of you, but there's at least half a dozen titles in those lists that I previously missed out on that I'm looking forward too.

Does anyone else dislike subtitles? I feel like I miss stuff that is going on in the process of reading the subtitle, especially if it is a long one. I wish I knew Japanese because the original Japanese voices are always better. Since I don't though I settle for dubbed anime series. Anyone else have any thoughts on the subject?

Also, I can't decide what to watch... maybe the series X since I own it but have yet to watch it..

I love subtitles. i hear that issue shared between a lot of people, but subs are really only a matter of practice. the more you watch with subs, the better you become at reading them while watching the action. my only issues comes with cultural gag anime (sayonara zetsubo sensei im looking at you) where a lot of the gags are word play and tends to go a million miles an hour to keep the sense of insanity you get with gag anime. These anime usually entails notes, which means an extra string of text to juggle. But this can be further fixed by clicking pause, so i still can't complain.

I don't mind them, but I can understand not caring much for them. Occasionally I will prefer dubbing, but usually more for reasons of comedic timing than not being able to read the line at a glance and still look at the rest of the screen. I guess I've just watched enough fansubs that I got used to reading them.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that, because I can't speak Japanese, I can't really judge how good or bad the original voice actors are. I can't tell if they have a regional accent, or if it sounds like a fake voice (outside of shrill/annoying children's voices), and so on.
'course, they do get the benefit of having animations sync'ed to the language, versus trying to match things with an English dub.

What I do consider is the translation. While watching a dub, try flipping on subtitles. To be fair, making different languages fit into the same scene timing, much less animations, is not easy. Some liberties might need to be taken. Sometimes they're close as they can reasonably be...other times not.
Simple solution for me is to just go for subtitles, where the translators can be as accurate as they want.
