It's based on a series of Japanese shorts released to DVD. (I'm not positive, but I don't believe they were aired on TV.) The shorts, and the game are very mock horror/horror themed comedy.
I had the PAL version of that one. Bought it on a whim for next to nothing. It was stolen from me though, along with half of my collection.

You say it is actually worth something now?

I remember it being very quirky, but not very fun to play.

Edit:

Hold on a tick, it seems like I still have it in my collection.

More obscure PS2 games I personally enjoy:

Image
Simple 2000 Series Vol. 113: The Tairyou Jigoku
Survival horror where you're a girl trying to survive being ravaged by huge insects.

Image
Simple 2000 Series Vol. 112: The Tousou Highway 2: Road Warrior 2050
Think Mad Max road shootin' action.

Really the whole Simple 2000 series in general on PS2 is full of crazy obscure games, definitely worth looking into the library for the curious. A handful of the games even made into English in the UK under different names of course.

I'm not sure of the exact worth of the PAL version, but the JP version commands a solid 100 bones complete.

Then the PAL version should be worth even more since Gregory is a narrative heavy game which you can only enjoy if you know the language being spoken.

You never know with these things though.

It is funny how there were so many quirky niche Japanese releases that made it to PAL territories but not NTSC/U

Sold listings on Ebay show the PAL version going for about $15, but they're all international listings.

It's hard to ever really know. I don't think the JP version of Rule of Rose is really any more rare than the US release, but probably because the latter was published by Atlus instead of Sony, it generally costs nearly twice as much.

Ha ha, typical collectors. Dont care about the game itself, just want whatever is rarest.

I'm no collector but having a rare game is nice.

Having a good game is the only thing that is nice in my book. Wanting to buy a cool game to play it only to find out that it is "rare" is a pain in the ass.

I wish every game ever made was dirt common so everyone could easily own and play them. Never saw the point of collecting for the sale of collecting.

Collecting for games is like collecting for anything else, to own a piece of history. I play/collect for the game boy. I would love to pick up Spud’s Adventure which is a rare game worth about $100 retail. The game isn't good but it would be cool to own a piece of gaming history. Just like owning a Super Bowl game used football signed by Joe Montana. It would cost in the 1000's and can't even be used to play catch but you own a piece of history.

I agree, in that I would probably prefer it if every game ever made were just as common as the next, but impracticality aside, availability doesn't always determine price. Nintendo published games on the SNES and N64 are a fine example. Also, most of the major Nintendo titles and "must have" games for the GC hold considerable value in lieu of re-prints and budget re-releases.
