$58,000 is between shit and the poverty level? Damn, my Dad has never made that much in a year.

It's $58k on average only because of special librarians like myself. Academic librarians can do OK, but public and school? My mother is a manager with a master's and 30 years experience at her public library, and I make roughly $6k less my second year on the job. And her salary has gone up a fair bit in the last decade. 15 years ago, she was making just over $30k a year. The position she held then has not seen its salary increase whatsoever. Public and school library salaries are pretty much the same they were 15 years ago.

Does anyone really think this economy will ever turn around or is it going to keep slipping? All I ever hear is that the middle class continues to thin out and hasn't recovered.

In an open market it's pretty much impossible for the economy to not get better.
