Samurai convinced me to watch Gurren Lagann and I ended up finishing it over a 3 day marathon. So very excellent indeed.
As somebody who isn't a huge anime fan and doesn't really know much about anime, do any of you have suggestions for shows I might like?

Hmm, I suggest Samurai X and Rurouni Kenshin. If you're into mecha, I HIGHLY suggest Gundam Wing, Gundam 00, Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Samurai convinced me to watch Gurren Lagann and I ended up finishing it over a 3 day marathon. So very excellent indeed.

I suggest DragonBall Z, the uncut version of course. The US kiddy version is absolute crap. Also, Initial D if you're into cars (even just a little).
Of course the 2 classic series: Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are a MUST watch. Also, FLCL if you like absolute randomness. Outlaw Star is always a good one.
I can suggest more if you want... send me a PM with your general interest and Ill give you some more series you might like.

I would suggest Berserk if you are interested in something serious/mature. Although since you just posted about TTGL, I might be completely off on that. It's quite accessible to new fans and is mostly devoid of a lot of "anime-ish" things, if that makes any sense. It also has a really faithful dub if you aren't a subtitle guy. Very gripping and intense show with some of the best writing and characters the medium will probably ever see.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:As somebody who isn't a huge anime fan and doesn't really know much about anime, do any of you have suggestions for shows I might like?
If you want something completely over the top and insane, and more modern looking, maybe check out the recent JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series (the 2012 one). Very fast paced and just nuts in general like TTGL. It's also a shorter contained series/story unlike a lot of shows in the genre that end up overstaying their welcome after 300 episodes with no end in sight.
I always find it hard to recommend anime to people though. There's a lot of series I love but I realize it's mostly niche. But those are two shows I could easily suggest anyone watch, anime fan or not.

My experience with anime is limited to what I watched of the English dub of Naruto when I was 12 and Gurren Lagann.Xeogred wrote: What others have you liked?
Thanks. Yeah, I'm just exploring the culture of it a bit now. It's never something I really payed much attention to so it's all very new to me. I'll give both of those a try.brunoafh wrote: I would suggest Berserk if you are interested in something serious/mature. Although since you just posted about TTGL, I might be completely off on that. How is Rurouni Kensin? I've always wanted to give it a shot, but never got around to it.Hmm, I suggest Samurai X and Rurouni Kenshin.
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendat
Dunno if that helps...
Any genre you might be particularly interested in?
Do you mind subs?
I want to say Monster for some reason. I guess it's one of those shows that feels "barely anime" to me in all the stuff I've seen and like some drama you'd see on HBO or something. Good mystery thriller, maybe a bit long for starters though.
I wouldn't compare them despite some viewers doing so, but Death Note is awesome and maybe another good entry level watch. Very addicting and pretty over the top crazy at times.
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is top notch. Two seasons and a third movie. You can watch these before the movies, despite them being newer, in fact I'd even recommend going this route. To sum it up, the movies, the series, the manga, and the new OVA... are all their own alternate timelines, so don't worry about piecing them together or going in some special order. But yeah SAC is amazing if you want some good drama with some action/sci-fi.
Essential guns stuff is pretty easy to watch... Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Black Lagoon, Hellsing Ultimate (very violent), Gungrave, and so on.
For comedy I still think Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Nadesico are some of my favorites. Tenchi Muyo / Universe and El Hazard are really good too.
If you're ever interested in classic stuff, I think Macross SDF, Gundam (possibly the trilogy movies), Space Adventure Cobra, City Hunter, Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, etc would be some good starters. Sci-fi mecha populated the medium in the 80's, along with some great drama like Maison Ikkoku or Touch.
If episode count isn't an issue and you're still into shounen, maybe check out the new Hunter x Hunter, Fairy Tail, or One Piece.
Maybe you'll find a new hobby here, maybe not. I'd recommend starting with what you're comfortable with, genre wise... and then just go from there and kind of do your own experimenting. At least that worked for me, heh.

Its one of the best series Ive watched. Its got humor, drama, romance, fighting. I highly recommend it and its counter-part Samurai X.Wispmage wrote:How is Rurouni Kensin? I've always wanted to give it a shot, but never got around to it.Hmm, I suggest Samurai X and Rurouni Kenshin.
