Everyone I know who went to cosmetology school found a job immediately.

People with a CDL aren't hard pressed to find a job either.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Everyone I know who went to cosmetology school found a job immediately.
RT: Okay. It was quirky three days ago when I sported a Cracker Jack temporary tattoo. Now I just wish the sucker would go away.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I went to college and got a BA in English with a History minor. I went to grad school and got a Masters in Library and Information Studies. Forbes rated my masters as one of the worst to have back in June because actual library jobs are few, little growth is forecasted for them in the next decade, and salary options are somewhere between shit and the poverty level. The average mid-career salary (according to Forbes) for this master's is about $58,000 (some folks start at $25,000 or less in this industry with a Master's. The term for this in library land is "paying your dues." Which is funny, because making that much money there's no way to pay the debts you acquired while paying for a Master's program). To rub salt in the wound, I have friends with only Bachelor degrees whose starting pay was over $60,000. They're engineers.
Fortunately for me, the MLS/MLIS degree has become more and more bifurcated over the last decade as data and metadata has become more and more important to corporations. So if you end up in libraries, aim to work with taxonomy and dataflow in a corporate environment. Otherwise, don't expect horse shit for pay. Or respect.
I fully admit that I am very, very lucky to have my career with Turner Broadcasting. I'm doing considerably better than 95% of the people I graduated with in terms of salary, and I love what I do. But when I look around at other folks with this background...ugh, just avoid it.

$58,000 is between shit and the poverty level? Damn, my Dad has never made that much in a year.
Is it weird that identify with and care more for the plight of a teenage witch on a 90's TV show than I do for most people I really know?

$58K is squat for somebody with a Master's Degree. I'm with Ack's friends I have no college education and I'm making 6 figures, it must be frustrating for those that spent so much on a college education to have their cards fall thusly.Forlorn Drifter wrote:$58,000 is between shit and the poverty level? It depends where you live. Some places you can live nicely on 50-60k, other places (i.e. big cities) not so much.Forlorn Drifter wrote:$58,000 is between shit and the poverty level? Damn, my Dad has never made that much in a year.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

That makes sense, I didn't take the Master's Degree into account.Stark wrote: $58K is squat for somebody with a Master's Degree. I'm starting to not really want to go to college, it doesn't seem like its worth it when I could do quite a lot of things for good pay with just a certificate. I mean, if you get certified where you can work at various dealerships, you can make a $100,000 a year doing warranty work. I think HD dealerships sometimes pay as high as $125,000, but that just might be me wanting an excuse to work on motorcycles.

You guys obviously know more than me and all, does anyone really think this economy will ever turn around or is it going to keep slipping? All I ever hear is that the middle class continues to thin out and hasn't recovered.
Guess I'm higher low class on the pay scale, state makes a big difference though. I can't fathom what I'd do if I were even making 40k right now. Even 30k here would probably make a solo apartment very doable.

I would tell you my thoughs on this, but it would probably turn into a full blown debate on economic policy.
