I'm also another one that instantly regrets selling things... when I actually do.

But, I am getting better in the redundancy aspect. I sold off all my copies of MM, and MM X, snd settled for having the compilations on GC, yet I still have 4 or 5 ports of the same game. (See Fatal Fury Special)

I know I even messaged Brad fairly recently about getting rid of some things, due to a certain displeasure they've given me, but then decided against it; mostly due to the "rarity" problem.

IDK, I'd say make a list of things that you know you want, and start hunting those, and try to fight possible impulse buys because it simply fits into the criteria above. (Unless it's really cheap.)

I do actually think this is good advice. And something I've never done in the past if you can believe it. All these years collecting, and I've never really just made a high priority Want List.

You should do this, and you should keep your want list in a place accessible from your phone. It will prevent you from buying both games you don't really want and games that you already own.

That said...my want list currently has 1408 games listed on it; so, it does not exclude too many games.

I do keep a list of games I already own on my phone so I don't buy dupes. Though that didn't stop me recently from buying 2 copies of the same game in the same day. :|

I think a healthy idea would be to take a step back from collecting, or even the video game industry as a whole, and indulge in one of your other interests/hobbies for a while. None of us regulars here actually need more games than we already own.

Then, with a clear perspective, you can truly re-approach what you do or don't enjoy physically owning. I do it each time before purging some fat from my collection, and have yet to regret a thing.

Go nuts, sell off the games you don't like - the video game police aren't gonna nab ya'.

Hopefully that was because you got a great deal on said game and plan on selling or trading it. I'll buy dupes only with the intention of reselling or trading (or if its to replace an worse condition original). Lately I've been too lazy to post stuff for sale on eBay so a few dupes are starting to build up (as seen my fs thread). This is the one area of my collecting I want to address... If I am not lazy enough to go out and buy dupes then I need to not be lazy enough to make a real attempt at selling or trading them quickly thereafter.

It's so easy to get sucked into the politics of collecting, that one can forget that all games' sole intent is to provide fun. If you're not getting enjoyment out of a title, then ditch it. Rarity, and series completion be damned.

I'm not sure why in general something like this bothers people... is it the clutter? It makes sense to make money off of games you don't like I suppose but I don't see why I shouldn't keep around as many games and consoles as I want if they're not in the way physically. :?

I am focusing on a wishlist now. Quality over quantity.

Actually I have two wishlists - one is for retro games (it's in my sig). The other is for current-gen stuff.

The current-gen wishlist is on Amazon, where I usually buy current-gen games - so stuff gets removed automatically when purchased.

That said, I still have my share of impulse buys. If I'm at a flea market and I see a stack of $1 Atari games I'm not just gonna walk by.

I've honestly thought about this before but in a slightly different fashion. I wasn't going to score them but definitely give them the ol' college try, then write down all the reasons I should keep it versus why I shouldn't and make a final decision. I'd keep that writing somewhere easily accessible (such as a blog like yours) and when I start pissing and moaning to myself about why I dumped it, I can re-visit my notes. Same goes for reading it again when I see a game and wonder why I kept it.
