Its hard to tell with pic discs. All of mine sound just as good as my black vinyl, excluding my Amon Amarth picture disc. (Which I will be getting rid of.) Ever since I've gotten it it has a certain buzz underneath all the music, which is aggravating.
I guess its just a pressing quality thing.

I don't even like picture discs to begin with anyway. I think they're kinda gaudy.

I like them because I'm such a big fan of Album Covers, which is also a large reason why I like vinyl, in addition to just generally liking vinyl. Part of the reason I don't like CD's, the cover are just so small. Its harder to appreciate the smaller details in the art on a CD case.
Alternatively to picture discs, I do like all the colored discs I can get.
But with cost issues I might have to switch to CD's.

Yeah but picture discs generally just awkwardly crop the album cover into a circle.
It's not like you don't get a jacket/sleeve with non picture discs anyway.

Is that what it's called? Never heard that term before.AppleQueso wrote:Picture discs usually have more surface noise because of the way they're made.
are you talking about Deceiver of the Gods? If so, I know what you mean. I might just get mine signed (I'm going to a concert tomorrow) for collector's value and get a used CD for ripping. Oh, and hope like hell for a black record.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Its hard to tell with pic discs. All of mine sound just as good as my black vinyl, excluding my Amon Amarth picture disc. Most of the time, but the ones that aren't are nice to look at. OverKill's The Electric Age has a picture of the band on the bottom of the first record and some random art on both sides of the other record.AppleQueso wrote:Yeah but picture discs generally just awkwardly crop the album cover into a circle.
Quick thought: Perhaps the OverKill record sounds so good because it's two records instead of one?

I have one of the "Rare Special Edition one of two thousand, hand numbered picture disc" copies of Twilight of the Thunder God. I got it when I was naive enough to believe that stuff would rise in value... it held decently enough, but not great. I've recently started to lose interest in Amon Amarth, so I'll probably be selling it.GSZX1337 wrote:are you talking about Deceiver of the Gods? If so, I know what you mean. By two records, you mean a double LP, correct? I don't really see the difference, other than it might mean the cuts for the songs are further spaced apart.

Re: Anyone Collect or Still Listen to Vinyl?
Picture discs look neat, but definitely can suffer from surface noise depending on production method, and wear out quicker than black vinyl.
As far as wear, black is usually the longest lasting, followed by other darker colors. Clear is technically the least durable but it's still plenty durable for most purposes.
A double LP release of an album will usually sound better than that same album on a single LP, due to less compression being needed. The mastering engineer/pressing plant will usually have to start compressing the audio after ~13 or 14 minutes per side. I have plenty of electronica records that are 12" 45's, with only one track on each side of the 12"

There's a "fuzz doom" band that had a record release, and the LP release was spread over six records, with each song on one side. The band ran out of money and broke up pretty quickly.

I find that color doesn't matter much, it really simply hinges on the quality of the pressing itself. A high quality pressing of the same album in clear vs the same pressing in black likely won't have any sound difference.skate323k137 wrote:Picture discs look neat, but definitely can suffer from surface noise depending on production method, and wear out quicker than black vinyl.

When they're new, you're absolutely correct. The same master pressed to multiple colors will sound exactly the same. The difference is that black vinyl will hold up better over multiple (read, a LOT of) plays. Clear/colored vinyl wears out faster is all I was saying.AppleQueso wrote:I find that color doesn't matter much, it really simply hinges on the quality of the pressing itself.
