I am in Japan, which system should I buy?

sorry to de-rail, but if you get a chance let me know what Final Fantasy III is going for on PSP in Japan. Ebay sellers are charging in the $45 range and I have a hunch that's pretty gouge-ish.

Is it also in english or can you read japanese?

I just wanted to update you! I followed the advice of some other friends here or on Reddit and I went to visit Mandarake Galaxy in Nakano Broadway. First of all, this place is A-MAZING! Entering into Mandarake Galaxy is like entering into a museum. They have tons of retro gaming stuff, everything with boxes and original manuals, everything marked with specific conditions! It's fantastic!!!

I finally decided on which system to buy. As I said before, I decided to go with an handheld so that I can play with it while I am going all around Tokyo. I did not find any good Gameboy worth the price they were asking and I finally decided to buy a Nintendo DS so that I can play with DS games and also with Game Boy Advance games as well!

Together with the Nintendo DS, I got New Super Mario Bros. I may have overpaid it but I wanted to support Mandarake Galaxy for the passion and attention into details that they put into their job!

You can't avoid questionable lighting for old Gameboy games.
Unfortunately the backlit SP never released in Japan.

Mandarake Galaxy in Nakano Broadway.

Oh, snap. I completely forgot about Mandarake. There's one in Shibuya, also. I've only ever been there once, and wasn't very impressed, but I'm pretty sure it's on one of the streets past the fork at the koban, up from Center Gai. It's in a basement somewhere around there.

Glad you figured out what to purchase. NSMB isn't a particularly deep game. Maybe you'll enjoy replaying it, but I'm not particularly good at Mario games, and I was able to 100% in only a handful of hours. There's a metric shit-ton (I'm pretty sure that's the scientific term for it) of great games for the DS, though. So you should be able to pick up some pretty great stuff without looking too hard, if NSMB doesn't tide you over.

This forum is simply great! If you followed briefly this thread, you have seen that CRTGamer asked me to get a game for him while I was in Tokyo. I found the game and, back home, I shipped the game to him.

He asked me "how much do I owe you" and I said "don't worry, consider it a gift from a fellow gamer" and he said "thanks, give me your address and I will send you a thank you note".

Today I came back home and I found a wonderful package waiting for me with THREE Game Boy Advance games (Namco Museum, Pac Man Collection and Marble Madness) together with a MIB PC software (Star Wars Behind The Magic).

What can I say? THANK YOU SO MUCH TO CRTGAMER AND THANK YOU TO THIS WONDERFUL COMMUNITY!

I used to live in Nakano (Numabukuro) and I went to Mandarake all the time. A lot of the arcade games were set to Free Play. Good times.

Just a quick message to say that today I visited Super Potato in Akihabara for the first time and I was overwhelmed by the number of games and systems they have. Also, the fact that the store is super small (it's on three floors but each floor is small and packed) didn't help me decide what to buy.

I really need to think about the games I am more excited about (as some of you suggested) and then go buy the system that supports those games.

Did you go to the Super Potato in Ikebukuro, too? The prices are a bit cheaper since no tourists go there. They always have a box in front with free stuff (no purchase necessary) which is usually packed with random peripherals. I always take Super Famicom controllers from that box.
