I did a bunch of reflows on RROD 360. It worked But the consoles eventually broke again.
I decided i would no longer bother with reflows. Ill just get the equipment to do lead solder reballs eventually.

i have heard of the reflow method, but not willing to do this. reballing though im not even sure what that is (well know i know cause i googled it). my guess is i don't have the whole know-how to do this, and im not totally sure i know of a place that would do it for me.

Don't worry it wasn't your work that broke it. :P Reflow is only a temp fix, it's only a matter of time before the solder joints would break free again.

If you ever do go into reballing, make a thread! I'm very curious to see someone try it themselves (and the expense that goes with it)

There aren't too many because it is difficult and you need a couple of pieces of equipment to do it right. Most places do what I call "shaddy" reflow work. They take a blow dryer to your CPU and GPU and hope it softens the solder enough to reconnect for a couple months.

If money is tight, it might not be a bad idea to try a reflow on the GPU and see if it can hold you over long enough until PS4 release. Sony is going to phase the PS3 into the entry level console for the world (similar to PS2 when PS3 was released), so it will be getting cheaper around then.

This is basically my plan for now, but probably not gonna reball/reflow it. The perks about my roomates is that they have a ps3 and barely use it, so i will at least still be able to play killer is dead when that comes out, and once the ps4 comes out i will probably go pick up a new ps3 then. hell i may even get killer is dead for the 360....not sure on that.

"Re-flowing" anything with directed heat is almost always going to result in new problems.

The only real re-flowing technique people should consider is re-baking the board. The issue there, though, is trying not to go above the threshold temperatures for any components.

Tin solder does realign itself properly, so it should work.

But obviously, the best solution is to re-seat the chip entirely by re-balling it.

The $80-$120 isn't that bad of an option if it's a valuable model PS3 ... a personal re-balling machine is about $600 starting price. Which isn't too bad ... if you were doing it for money.

However, if nothing has actually broken yet ... it could be useful to open it up and change the thermal paste, this should lower temperatures somewhat and could stop the breakage from occurring in the first place.

whether anything is truly broken or not i can't be sure of at all, in reality while we are all pretty sure on the issue, i can't say for sure if it's the real issue. i may open the system just to see whats going on in it (and im not even sure i could distinguish damage unless it was a burnspot on the board or something). personally i only have very basic technical know-how, i may be able to tell what is wrong and why, but actually using techniques is all a shot in the dark for me.
