Mission Craft (Sun, 2000)

Not to be confused with the Mission-Craft/Minecraft series, obviously. But it can be confused with StarCraft because, well, look at it. I guess people might have heard of this already, mainly for all the wrong reasons. I wanted to play it again, though, just for the hell of it. Ripping off artwork and music might be ok if you're making a free game that you have no intention of making money from, but plagiarism on this scale for a commercial release is a bit cheeky. Not content with stealing the graphics from StarCraft, they ripped-off the music from WarCraft 2. Just to annoy Blizzard even more, presumably. Power-ups, bomb icons and bullet patterns, meanwhile, are nicked from Psikyo games.

There are 9 stages, and level design is a bit weird; Stage 2, for example, can be beaten in around 20 seconds. Enemies tend to have massive amounts of HP, so unless you fancy button-mashing like crazy, autofire will definitely come in handy. So far I've made it to the end of Stage 5; the bullet patterns get faster and denser as you progress, so there should be a decent challenge there, if you can bring yourself to persevere with it. There are lots of reasons why it deserves one star, but after playing it for a while, I found that I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. If you're the type who enjoys playing terrible doujin games for a laugh, or if you fancy playing the ugliest Psikyo game ever, then check it out...

Rating: *

P.S. There's an arcade in Brookfield, Illinois that has this, so be sure and pay a visit if you're in the area. :)

^ That one actually looks kind of fun and relatively fluid from the video. Plagiarism or not, it's probably still more fun than Starcraft

I guess there's a certain amount of fun to be had with it, but after about 10 or 20 minutes playing it, you'll inevitably start thinking, 'I still haven't beaten Gunbird 2 or Dragon Blaze yet, so why the hell am I playing this?'

Soft Action also made a PC shmup in 1992 called Fox Ranger. I got it on a CD of DOS shareware/freeware/demo games at a computer show back in the day. The graphics are up to 16-bit standards of the day. The weapons are somewhat unbalanced but for a hori it's pretty decent.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL_KWigHrFg

It appears to be part of a series which includes a Parodius-style game called Box Ranger. More information on Soft Action's games is over at HG 101.

Fox Ranger was on my list!

I've downloaded a few of those Korean PC-DOS games, but I haven't tried them out to see if they work yet.

Would Viper Phase 1 count? To my knowledge, that game never received a home port...which is too bad because it is an awesome game.

I keep meaning to return to Viper Phase and put more time into it. It's pretty cool. We should really have a high score thread for it on here...

Meanwhile, I got a couple of these working...

Fox Ranger (PC-DOS, Soft Action 1992)

Image

Eardis: Revolution Force (PC-DOS, Soft Action 1994)

Image

Both games run fine on DosBox. Fox Ranger can be found on Abandonia and Eardis can be found...somewhere. One word of warning, though: I wasn't able to remap keys (no sign of cfg files in the folder either) and the weapon keys are Ctrl and Alt. Pressing Crtl+Alt+arrow makes the screen rotate or flip on my laptop... So if you get the same thing happening then right-click on the desktop, select Graphics Options, then disable Hot Keys. That should sort it out.

Fox Ranger is like a cheap Thunder Force knock-off, with similar looking player ships and weapons. Level design is rather basic, though, with lots of small, grey popcorn enemies. Bosses look a bit better, plus the music is quite catchy. Doesn't really compare with the best arcade shmups of the time, but not too bad.

Eardis has some nice graphics, but somewhat less-than-smooth scrolling. It looks a little bit like Flame Zapper Kotsujin, plus later levels apparently have some Axelay-like visual effects. I didn't find it all that much fun to play, but I haven't managed to beat Stage 1 yet... You circle this large mothership, destroying various parts of it while other enemies swarm the screen. If you don't destroy a part (and these take quite a few hits to explode) then you'll just have to wait to get it the next time around. Maybe it gets better from Stage 2 onwards...

Tried out Into The Storm but couldn't get it working on DosBox. There are links to it (plus Eardis as well) on HG101, so someone else might have better luck...

From those links, I did get Zyclunt working, which isn't a shmup but is worth a look - it's a futuristic Strider-ish kind of game.

Yes, Zyclunt does sound like a slightly dodgy name.

Slordax: The Unknown Enemy (PC-DOS, Softdisk Publishing/id Software 1990)

Early 90s PC game that looks like an early 80s arcade game. So this is what John Carmack was up to pre-Doom, pre-Wolfenstein, even pre-Commander Keen.

It's...er, fairly basic stuff, as you can see. I've played through the first few levels and there's not much variety. Stage 2 has a boss battle, at least, while Stage 3 features more environmental hazards. Runs fine on DosBox; there's a write-up on Abandonia, but the download is unavailable. It can be found fairly easily if you search 'Slordax abandonware'. Assuming you're weird and you actually want to play it.

This gets a brief mention in the Undiscovered Shmups article, but there's not much info about it, so...

Sideline (PC-DOS, Union Systems/EMAG Software, 1996)

A long-lost PC shmup, seemingly developed in Taiwan, which also got a European release, but...only in Poland.

Anyway, thanks to some sterling detective work by folks over on shmups forum, a demo version was unearthed, and eventually a full version. No links for the full version, but you can check out the demo if you go to the thread...

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3209

Graphically, it looks a bit like an old Irem shooter, while the gameplay is inspired by the usual suspects, e.g. R-Type, Gradius, Thunder Force. There's even a Raizing-esque touch to the controls, as you can change your option formation so that they shoot in various directions.

It's really very good. Better than most old DOS shooters of the time, and comparable with some of the best horizontal scrolling shmups on the Mega Drive. There aren't too many negatives; some of the levels might be a tad long, but the variety of enemies keeps you occupied, so that things never get dull. Difficulty is well-judged; you can play for a 1CC if you want, or there are a limited amount of credits (three, I think) to provide a decent enough challenge even if you do decide to credit-feed. So far I've made it to Stage 5, not actually sure how far into the game that is.
