This is true. I recall purchasing NES and SNES games from Gamestop as late as 2005.
Mine didn't have retro stuff in 2005, at all. But back when Dreamcast was still relavant, they did. I know because my brother sold my magnificent NES collection for a bunch of GBC stuff.

they only sold what little stock they had.

GS would not take trade ins for old classic games.

One of my gamestops locally, some years back, got a small selection of Genesis,Nes and Dreamcast VMUs. They only had them for a few months while the product sold out.

I took a few vmus and some Genesis games. Nothing was over $5.00

This was a few years back around 2006.

I think There was too much old stock in some Gamestop warehouses and they spread it out at a few select stores.

All of the games that they had for that little while had those really thick yellow stickers that I think were from EB games.

All of the genesis games they had were very common games. They had Sonics for about $3-4 and these were the coolest games that they offered.

I'd imagine so, since he got the GBC (used), a carrying case, some stupid screen magnifier, and a handful of used games.

What was traded was an NES and a collection for it that I would drool over today. I still get pissed thinking about it. And my mom was okay with it because it was "our" NES collection (granted a lot of it was given to us by our Grandma; even though I had added to it as a kid by mowing lawns in the neighborhood, he hadn't) and she assumed newer=better.

But before I go on a rant about something that happened 20 years ago, yeah, he got ripped off. I had every Mega Man, every Dragon Warrior, every Mario title, both Zeldas, Final Fantasy, all 3 Ultimas, all 3 Adventure Islands, all 3 Castlevanias, all 3 Adventures of Lolos, Tetris, Dr. Mario, both Duck Tales, etc. etc., etc. Plus I had the NES Avantage Joystick, the Game Genie w/codebook, the Official Nintendo Cleaning Kit, and the snap-on thumbsticks that went over the NES controller.

I remember taking NES games to Gamestop.

They certainly did lowball back then.

I distinctly remember the cashier there being very disappointed because I was trading in Spy Hunter on NES.

The two Play n' Trades that were close by decided to join forces, loose the Play n' Trade moniker and rename themselves Gamers Edge. It's still run by the same people and the only noticeable difference (other than the bigger store and more lighting) was that I did notice some of their prices fluctuate. Some went up, some went down.... Still a good store, overall.

Because of the number of games I bought I was registered twice for their free Xbox One or PS4 give away. Not that I expect to win or anything, but I thought it was a nice gesture.

@BurningDoom

The answer to that question is the same answer to the age old question, How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

Damn, I guess Game Stop prices are going...UP.

Here is my copy of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn I bought a little while back.

Here is a copy I found today: (Cupertino, CA Store...the one next to Apple Headquarters)

While we are at it, look at what they are selling Mario All-Stars for:
