90's style arcade racing games

Post by kelsoanim »

I was playing Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast yesterday and I realized how much I love the 90's era style arcade racers. I have a lot of fond memories playing great SEGA and Midway racing games in the arcade. I love the over the top "physics", high speeds and bright colorful visuals.

I really miss these types of games and wish I owned more of them for home consoles. Right now all I have is Outrun Coast 2 Coast, a few Need for Speed games, Sega Rally for Saturn, Cruisin' USA and World, Rad Racer 1 & 2, and Midway Arcade Treasures 1-3 (okay, so that's probably a good deal of 90s arcade racers). I would love to collect some more, specifically more like late 90s racers like Sega Super GT.

What are some other good arcade style racing games for home consoles? And what was your favorite arcade racing game? I used to love Hydro Thunder. It's not quite the same at home with a standard controller and without the too-loud speakers pounding behind your head but it's still a good time.

Burnout series, Blur, Split/Second, possibly the Motorstorm games as well. Some, like the Ridge Racer series, never really stopped.

Might check out the Trackmania games if you have a PC as well.

I love the Ridge Racer series, especially RRV for PS2. The new Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) is also very good. Funnily enough, a little while ago there was a Kickstarter for The 90's Arcade Racer which sounds like it could just up your alley. It's not out yet, but hopefully soon.

Also, pardon the shameless plug, but check out Rolling Start!! for this stuff as well.

The 90s were a great time for arcade racing games. Cruis'n series, SF Rush series, Final Lap 2 & 3, Daytona USA 1 & 2, Ridge Racer 1 & 2, Outrunners, Hyperdrive, Winding Heat, Offroad Thunder, Sega Rally 1 & 2, I could go on!

As far as ports go, many great ones on the Dreamcast.

Sega Rally 2
F355 Challenge
Hydro Thunder
Daytona USA

I'm also gonna suggest Test Drive 6 because it has an arcade like quality.

If you have a 360 or PSP, check out Sega Rally Revo.

Ridge Racer 2 on PSP is probably the best Ridge Racer game.

Rage Racer
Ridge Racer Type 4

and don't sleep on Excite Truck and Excite Bots. Excite Truck is like $5 now and kinda reminds me of the San Francisco Rush games.

No 90's arcade racing game collection is complete without Daytona USA.

Any Sega racer really, they were pretty much the kings of the arcade racer genre.

Battle Gear 2 and 3 for the ps2, but these games might be too hard core for the average gamer

The Extreme G series on PS2 (and N64 as well!). I played it with o.pwuaioc not too long ago. #3 was particularly fun. One of the better Motorcycles games I've played. Has power-ups, weapons, and cool wipeout style tracks with awesome music.

All the suggestions have been great so far. I am a huge fan of Hydro Thunder as well. The 360 one definitely gave me plenty of fun hours.

I've only played Extreme G I and II, but they are terrible. Stay away.
