K.O. for my ps3? help if you can please.

Post by weasels »

Hey guys, it's been awhile.

As the title suggests, my ps3 is most likely dead. although I can't be too sure. Here's the story: one day i was about to watch netflix, and while i was serching for a show to watch graphical glitches started to build up, I knew this was bad so i turned off my ps3 and waited a bit. after a good while I started up the system to get a black screen of death. as some ps3 owners know this is basically a hard disk error, and so i went into safe mode and picked several of the options untill i tried the fifth option which too my knowledge restores the disk drive to factory default and fixes it up(?). i chose this option because i would rather loose save data over loseing my ps3. Of course that didn't work totally right, and instead i got this:

so, my thoughts on this:

1. it's still a disk error and in that case all i have to do is replace my hard disk
2. the chip at some point obtained damage due to heat (what i think the issue to be)
3. the above two options apply.

what do you guys think?

I don't want to be grim but... this might be the beginning of the end. I may be way off here, but the most common death for PS3 is the CPU disconnecting from the motherboard due to the crappy lead free solder breaking off and causing the YLOD. The GPU is right next to the CPU and uses basically the same system, so your GPU chip solder points might be breaking free. (Happened to me but it caused a complete black screen of death due to the GPU unable to connect to the board) This was on a CECHK model Fat PS3 so not terribly uncommon.

Try a different HDD just to see. If not....

don't feel bad about being "grim", while the ps3 is one of my most used systems I still have access to many more games (being a retro gamer and all haha) so while it will be a while until i can get another ps3 (being jobless) it's not the end of the world for me. but yeah, that could certainly be the issue with the system. either way life moves on.

I know this might not be the greatest help but you should probably sell it for salvage and buy a new PS3.

I had a ton of graphical issues before my FAT went YLOD. I was seeing a lot of weirdness with Overlord.

They can be reballed, from what I have heard a good reball is a good fix to the YLOD.

It can definitely be fixed and there are some crazy methods that work.

You can take apart the PS3, clean the crappy thermal compound off the CPU/GPU and put on some new, high quality paste on the CPU/GPU. Then, throw your motherboard into your oven. Yes, the oven so that you can evenly reflow the solder joints. Just google the exact and more detailed instructions, but the fix can be done for relatively cheap. I've done this for a couple of friends with a lot of success and they are all still going strong.

A good reball actually makes the PS3 more reliable than when it left OEM from Sony. Most reball places use Leaded solder which is significantly more reliable than unleaded.

Unfortunately most reball places I've come across you are looking at $80-$120 repair.

I know a lot of people love reflowing, but I strongly discourage a reflow as it is a temporary fix and generally don't last.
