Yeah, it's a little surprising. Is it the aesthetic that displeases?dsheinem wrote:I feel like the only regular Sony player around here with no interest in this...

Re: Dragon's Crown
I like the genre, but I am seeing red flags on this one. The aesthetic is certainly a part of it, but honestly reviews from sites that I put some stock in (The Escapist, Polygon, etc.) seem to be middling at best. On top of that, I don't like that you are going to have to settle with losing something fairly significant in either port you choose (frames of animation, ease of navigation, multiplayer options, etc.). It doesn't seem, to me, worth the price of entry. Maybe I'd pick it up eventually on discount if it were cross play out of morbid curiosity and an interest in the genre, but it's not.
If I ever check do it out, it'll probably be when it becomes free for PS+ members later this year.

It seems you say this jokingly, but it has crossed my mind that this might happen. I also feel this would be a great handheld game, but I don't want to pay $40 a handheld title. I really hemmed and hawed about SMT IV at $50, although I've more than gotten my money's worth out of that one already.dsheinem wrote:If I ever check do it out, it'll probably be when it becomes free for PS+ members later this year.

Yeah, I only bit on SMTIV because I already had FE:A and got the $30 credit. This game does seem like a prime candidate for an early PS+ release, which frankly is making me hesitate on buying a lot of other non-AAA Sony titles of late.Stark wrote:It seems you say this jokingly, but it has crossed my mind that this might happen. Re: Dragon's Crown
Meh, that Polygon review focused too much on social commentary and not as much on gameplay imo. I am not angry at her view, I just think she was trying to make a statement or an example. The style in that game is an embellishment and parody of 70s/80s style fantasy animation that is so over the top it is hard for me to find any offense or distaste from it.dsheinem wrote:I like the genre, but I am seeing red flags on this one. From what I have seen, the reviews for this have been glowing to mostly favorable, and this is for a niche game that doesn't necessarily have mass appeal, which to me is telling. I actually had cancelled my pre-order at one point, and re-ordered it this past week after the reception.

Actually games in this genre tend to do pretty well with the critics, no? Metacritic has it scored the same as the new Mystara port presently, but none of those reviews drop down as low...Jmustang1968 wrote:From what I have seen, the reviews for this have been glowing to mostly favorable, and this is for a niche game that doesn't necessarily have mass appeal, which to me is telling. do they generally? I'm not sure. How did Double Dragon Neon rank? I'm trying to think of other recent beatemups.dsheinem wrote: Actually games in this genre tend to do pretty well with the critics, no?
That said, if your lack of interest is solely based on the inclusion of oversexualized character models, you might be missing out on fun. Sure the characters look silly, but Vanillaware has a definite track record of good games, and *most* reviews I've read actually surprised me how positive they were considering the niche-nature of a game like this.

So this and Tales of Xillia are out tomorrow. Too bad I spent all my dough on retro games and Time and Eternity.
