Collecting for GB vs NES.

I've been thinking about focusing my collecting for the Gameboy or NES. Which system is more fun to collect for? Also, which is more economical?

If we're talking economical, GB games in general are much cheaper than NES games. There are also less mega pricy games out there that will cost you a lot more, although there are of course a few.

One fun thing about collecting GB or GBC games is that there are often some rarer games that can be hard to find, but aren't mega pricy to buy when you do.

Is space an issue for you?

A collection of big NES cartridges can quickly take up a whole book shelf. On the other hand, a collection of little Game Boy cartridges can fit into one card binder.

One good thing about the Game Boy is if you get a GBA or Gamecube Game Boy Player you've got the entire GBC and GBA libraries that you can branch off into as well. And if you're going to collect for Game Boy you might as well check out the entire Game Boy line since the GBA will play all three.

If we're just saying classic Game Boy versus NES, while the Game Boy has the advantage of quantity and lower prices, the NES has generally better quality and lots of landmark games.

Ultimately it comes down to what's better for you, what you enjoy and what you can afford right now. You really can't go wrong with the Game Boy family either way though.

Game boy collecting I find is funner but I am biased because I love my handheld gaming!

Definitely Gameboy.

I've had a lot more fun discovering the library of the Gameboy and have found it to be very interesting. There are tons of great, obscure titles for the handheld including imports. Add the GBC/GBA library and suddenly you have tons of games to keep you collecting for years/decades. :p

The games are also surprisingly cheap, abundant, and not really sought after as much as the NES library. As alien said, even the rarer titles aren't that expensive. To be honest, the most expensive games would be something like Shantae ($150+ easily) but that is not the norm for the Gameboy library.

Game Boy has been more fun, for three reasons:

Money. I have definitely spent less money collecting Game Boy games, even though I have roughly the same number of NES and Game Boy games. Probably I've spent 1/3 on Game Boy what I spent on NES. You can stretch your buck further with Game Boy.

Storage. I have about as many Game Boy games as I do NES games, but the NES games take up 20 times more space, so I've had to play Tetris with my NES game cartridges to get them all to fit on my shelf. Now when I get another NES cartridge I have to go through all my games and re-adjust them so they'll all fit. It's a pain. When you get serious about collecting boxed games you really run out of room in a hurry with the NES games. The Game Boy games don't present this problem, and even if you're collecting the boxes you still have the advantage of their being only 2/3 of the size of an NES box.

Playability. With the NES games I have to get the contacts lined up just perfectly when I want to play them, and that can be frustrating since it takes multiple tries to get the cart in the right position. Game Boy games rarely give me trouble. I clean them once and after that they always start up on the first or second try. And of course there is the Game Boy Player and Super Game Boy option which adds color to the games and they often look just as good as an NES game.
