Getting smells out

Post by GirlGamer55 »

So today I went to a few yard sales and happened to find a huge lot of NES boxes (some had games, some didn't). I bought them very cheap but sadly as I was walking away I got a strong smell of cigarettes. Stale too.

All the boxes stink of them.

My question, what do you do when you get stinky game items? I would just ignore it but the smell is strong and I happen to store my game stuff in my bedroom so not a good thing.

Boxes you will likely just have to air out. If you have an air purifier, you could shove it and the boxes in a closet to the same effect.

If it can be wiped down with a liquid, use white vinegar to get rid of the cigarette smell. It will smell like vinegar for a while but it will dissipate a lot faster than the cigarette smell.

I've used Clorox disinfectant wipes on cases before, maybe a lesser damp one would work. Dryer sheets in a clean box or just plain old airing out may do the trick.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Baking Soda helps absorb smells a bit. I would be weary about putting it on games, but even if you stick an open box into the big game box, it should help somewhat.

+1 for the dryer sheet method.
I bought Chrono Cross on eBay last year and it came to my house reeking of cigarette smoke on the manual and discs. I dropped a lightly scented dryer sheet into the games case and a week later the smell was completely gone.
If you don't mind waiting, throw them in a large Zip-Loc bag(s) with a sheet and let them sit a while. It's probably the least invasive way to attempt to get rid of the smell....

I might just use dryer sheets...I think we have a old box laying around of them since mom is allergic to everything and we can't use them.

If that doesn't work i'll try the box of baking soda...

Thanks :D

Oh and an update I just opened some of the plastic storing cases I got for free and they smell awful as well as the games that were stored in them. I know I can wash the plastic cases and even the plastic dust covers but what about the games themselves? I don't want to damage them...

Just drop the dryer sheets in the plastic cases with all the games in there and see how that goes first.

+1 Dryer Sheets
+1 Baking Soda (If dryer sheets do not work)

This has always worked for me.
