Did you read my first post regarding it? I said they never looked intimidating in the comics, either.Retrodude wrote:So what? Ya gotta give em credit for keeping the comics' color palette instead of going for something "grittier" or "more realistic". Aside from just being an awesome movie on its own, the biggest reason I love The Avengers is the effect it had on the genre. We have reached the point where comic book movies can actually be like the comics (goofy costumes, silly plots, over-the-top action, etc.) and the studios are willing to bankroll that without making tons of changes to make it more "mainstream". I think the Sentinels look awesome and Days Of Future Past is looking better and better all the time.BurningDoom wrote:Pretty much, yeah. But still, they're pink and purple.

My biggest problem is they were built in the 70s but they don't look very 70s. They should look like this

Fanboys - The humor in this Star Wars road trip movie resonates in a way that I think many folks on this board would find agreeable, and the cameos are all excellent (and, really, the high points of the film). The guys in the main cast are clearly having fun, but they are also clearly not great comedic/acting talents, and the film doesn't offer much other than cheap laughs. On the other hand, it doesn't really need to.
Grade: 2/5
Zelig - I've seen most of Allen's best-regarded films, but this is one I'd passed over. That was a mistake. The mockumentary film has a very dark humor hanging over it that makes for a thoughtful comedy and it is a marvel of film editing for the early 1980s. If anything, it is a bit too short and a bit too neatly wrapped up, given the lead up in the rest of the film. Nonetheless, it is smart satire and trademark Allen wit.
Grade: 3.5/5
I decided to watch Zelig as it was the "film of the week" over on The Dissolve, my new favorite film-related website. They have some excellent writers and smart film buffs over there that make their reviews and their articles really worth spending time with. Next week they'll have Brazil on tap, so I expect to read lots of good articles about that classic Gilliam flick soon. Y'all should check it out and let me know if you decide to start watching/following along (they also have some great daily cable pick suggestions!).

I refuse to watch this film until a director's cut is released as the version that's out there was horribly, hideously mangled by the Weinsteins. They tried to remove THE ENTIRE FUCKING POINT of why the guys went on that roadtrip in the first place and replace it with vulgar humor because they thought it would sell better. Ultimately, at least part of the original plot was retained, true, but from what I've read, the end product was nowhere near what the director had envisioned after what the execs did to it. When a director's cut is released that restores the film to what it was originally supposed to be, then I'll watch it. Until then, I'll pass.dsheinem wrote:Fanboys - The humor in this Star Wars road trip movie resonates in a way that I think many folks on this board would find agreeable, and the cameos are all excellent (and, really, the high points of the film). I doubt that emphasizing the point of the trip would have changed much. Any time the actors had to emote more than a scream of fear or a scream of anger I wanted to shoot myself.Retrodude wrote:I refuse to watch this film until a director's cut is released as the version that's out there was horribly, hideously mangled by the Weinsteins. I saw Pacific Rim ... I liked it a lot. I'm usually a sucker for Del Toro flicks, though.

2/5 is a pretty generous score for something that forced you to resist the urge to take your life.dsheinem wrote:Any time the actors had to emote more than a scream of fear or a scream of anger I wanted to shoot myself.

Just finished 25th Hour. Can you imagine yourself in his position?
Your last 24 hours as a free man before getting locked up for 7 years. No more hanging out with friends, drinking a few beers, partying. No more nothing. Makes me want to never do anything stupid enough to get locked up.

Indie Game: The Movie - I finally got around to seeing this, and was surprised to find a film that covered a topic of great interest to me (and that I feel I already knew a lot abut) in a way that was exceedingly compelling. The filmmakers weaved together several disparate yet illuminating narratives into an expertly paced and edited documentary. And, like the best documentary films, I left the film with a both sense of greater understanding and a sense of greater curiosity: it created an indelible snapshot of a moment which also revealed a much larger complexity than can be captured in any one study. In any case, it is well worth seeing by anyone who reads sites like this, and I recommend it.

The Girl - This controversial film tells a story about Hitchock's alleged obsession with Tippi Hedren during the making of two of his best films, The Birds and Marnie. Expertly acted and beautifully shot, the film nonetheless suffers from some issues with stilted dialogue and the representation of temporal progression. Still, it made me reconsider my appreciation of Hitch, Hedren, and of these two beloved films and sent me scurrying to the web afterward to gauge the film's accuracy. If you're as big of a fan of Hitch's oeuvre as I am, this is required viewing.
