Revisiting the Dreamcast

Post by Spyke »

Many years ago I had a Dreamcast. That was when I was a "general" gamer and I had a PAL machine and a steering wheel and playing racing games, shooters, shmups, adventure games, fighters - the works! Loved the console. Sold it on after a while as I thought the gaming bug had left me.... (silly boy)

Later when I got into shmups a few years ago I got another PAL DC, this time with a DC-X bootdisc and VGA adapter and played Gunbird 2, GigaWing and Under Defeat on it. Again I sold it after a while as it had a lot of competition on the 360, PS2 and Saturn.

Now I feel the need to do it again. I'm looking at getting a region-modded one maybe with a built in VGA mod too, just to keep things simple, but this time I have a plan. This time I'm going to concentrate on what the DC seems to have done so well at - games that were developed for it after it was officially off the market. Sturmwind. Border Down. Triggerheart Exelica. Trizeal. Last Hope. Dux. And the game I always wanted but never got to try: Zero Gunner 2.

I hope this third time I will take to the system so much that I will keep it.
I hope I can find the machine I'm looking for.
I hope I can afford those games.
I hope they impress me!

Ant

The Dreamcast is the reason I got into collecting. I wanted to play Sonic Adventure (my favorite game) and I wanted the full experience that I had from my childhood. The only way I could make it better is by getting the Dreamcast my brother has (the same one we had as kids)

It's my opinion but I think that the Dreamcast is one of the better systems to start a collection with. It's old enough to be considered retro and interesting but young enough to attract people to expand their gaming bona fides
Systems Owned: NES, Sega Genesis (Non-TMSS), Game Boy, Game Gear, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis (Model 2), PlayStation, N64, Sega Dreamcast, GBA SP, Xbox, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 3, PSP, Nintendo 3DS

I also started collecting with the Dreamcast..there is a solid game for every genre and IMO is the best party/multiplayer system out there..

Also unlike the Saturn, the rarest of the rare games will never go past like $80 so it's great to get a wide library

Er... I'm trying not to think too much about the cost of Border Down just now. It WILL be mine... (can I sell a kidney on ebay?)

Yeah not sure around you guys but the better DC games starting to get high at game stores. I saw Skies of Arcadia for $50 the other day! Makes me wish I would have kept my copy.

Hmm... As a matter of fact I've been thinking of starting a topic regarding this very situation I've been quite recently experiencing in my area as well (So Cal region). While Dreamast games has slowly but surely have gone up in price over the years (mostly the popular titles), Hardware and accessories have remained the same in value for quite long time. But I've been noticing a lot of retro game stores have increasing their prices on just about everything Dreamcast now. Hardware has gone up $10. Official controller have almost doubled in price and games have continued to be priced at really expensive prices.

You can have a dreamcast for looks, pristine and clean.

Or you can have a basic, workhorse one.

One thats kinda dirty (outside) but works just as good. You dont want to mess up that new clean DC by playing burned games.

You know you're gonna play copied games on it. Burn games and play them while you save up for the real games.

Today at the fleamarket I saw a Dreamcast for $15 bucks. Two controlers no VMU and no AV cord. A few scratches on it but still $15 is a good price.

I almost bought it. But I didnt cause I had to buy some dog food for my pets.

If its there by saturday (which I doubt) I'll buy it. It will just be one more for my collection. I think I have 4 or 5 dreamcasts already. You can game real cheap if you know how to work the system.

Point is, You can get a decent dreamcast for less than $25.

I agree with just about everything you posted.
Even with a lack of AV cables and a VMU, 15 bucks is a nice deal for a DC with 2 controllers (assuming they are official ones). if you do plan on going back to see if its still available, please let us know.

I have around 22 to 25 working Dreamcasts. I currently only have 2 non working units.
