So last night I was bored and played a game I had never played before, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - The Fighting Edition for Super Nintendo.
Been a while since I was completely taken by surprise by a games quality, far far better than I could have ever expected. Just so many things I like about it, the speed of the game, the incredibly accurate and responsive controls, the nice graphics and large sprites, the fighting system where you have to time special moves to make them more powerful meaning that you can't just spam fire balls because they'll be weak and slow, it's just an awesome fighting game.
Anyone else had this happen to them? It such an awesome feeling to discover a gem you never knew about previously, it gives you an awesome feeling when you discover a good game on your own with the aid of the internet or magazines that tell you if a game is good.
Games that completely surprised you quality wise.

I was surprised with how good arkham asylum was, I thought it was going to be a crap Dark Knight movie game, but low and behold it was one of the best games this generation that I played.

He probably meant "without"
Happened with me when I randomly opened a Zombies Ate My Neighbors rom in the SNES GoodSet, before I even went to any "retro" gaming sites.

Castle of Illusion on the SMS comes to mind. Having already been a fan of the Genesis version I didn't expect the SMS version to stand up, but it really does and is almost better in many aspects. It is a very solid 8-bit title in general.

One I can think of recently was Mickey Mania on the Genesis. I had gotten it from goodwill or something, but never played it, and ended up trading it away, while I was getting the trade together I decided to put it in and make sure it worked and everything. I ended up playing it for a while, and liked it so much I went straight to ebay to buy another copy.

Random games that turned out to be excellent - Tetris Battle Gaiden, Battle Cross, Battle Jockey - all multiplayer SNES/SFC games that are awesome. Tetris Battle Gaiden has an article on the front page, Battle Cross and Jockey do not, yet. They are five player games.
Games that I thought were going to be terrible but surprised me - Terraria and Orcs Must Die 2. I bought a 4 pack of Terraria because even if it was terrible my buddies and I could have fun in it. Several thousand hours of gameplay later. Orcs Must Die 2 is a surprisingly fun tower defense game - which is a genre that is slowly growing on me.
