I've made some bad purchases since I'm fairly new to collecting. Does everyone have their own way of remembering what games they want to get and what a good price is or is there a method everyone uses?

I make a list of the games I want for each system on my phone and order them by priority.

To see prices, I usually just check how much the game is going for on ebay/amazon, or you can use this website that charts prices for most systems:

On your list, write the price that you would be willing to spend for each, so when a game comes up you will know if you want it and how much you wanna pay.

Like others have said, check Amazon and eBay for your pricing.

As for keeping track of your collection, you can simply make a list like has been suggested. But you could also use various game collecting websites that keep track of that stuff. VGCollect.com, RFGeneration.com, Darkadia.com, and GameSpot all have collection & wishlist tools.

Actually I'm still struggling myself to get into a "system". For now I make up lists of what I want and what I have. And in my want list I put down tips that I'v learned about so I won't forget them...you know like always check inside a console that has a lid...there might be a game hidden in it.

I also use http://backloggery.com/ to make sense of my lists. But when I'm out and about I just try my best to use my memory, for now it's easy since I don't have a large collection but as I get more and more games I might forget I have something and buy another. But in that case I can always resell it...which I plan on doing anyways!

As for prices, it varys from state to state or even from town to town. For example, I went to Iowa this summer and found out that their prices on just about everything was a lot less then in Washington state where I live. And smaller towns tend to go both ways....small town means high prices because they are the only ones around and can afford to rip people off, or small town means not so many people so low prices so they can move stock fast.

Like Super Mario Bros for NES might be 5 bucks in Seattle while in Iowa it would be 2-3. Or something like that. I could give you some advice/tips if you wanted. Just pm if you want.

How do you make the spreadsheet? Excel? And how do you put it on your phone?

Yeah I just have a simple spreadsheet in Excel. Or could use Openoffice as well. Separate pages for systems. I actually uploaded the empty one before when someone asked this question.

My phone is a Windows based one, so there's a mini version of Excel on it. Would suck to be entering data on the go, but it's fine to just check the list quick. If one had a gmail account and internet available on their phone or a tablet, they could use google docs or something too. Obviously you could log into backloggery too, but I'm just using a spreadsheet. Simple and fast loading.

also remember not to pay attention to ebay BIN prices but instead take a look at the average completed bids, that shows what people are actually willing to pay for it. Kind of hard to do for very rare stuff that doesn't come to auction that much though.
