Has Anyone Ever Bought Retro Systems From Goodwill?

I bought a Game Gear but since it was only $15 and it came with about 10 games, I took a chance. When I got home it worked, but the caps were bad so there was no sound. I sold it on eBay for 15 bucks shipped, but kept the games (I have a working Game Gear). That was the first and last time I have ever seen a retro console at a thrift store.

I buy on and off. If I ever see an NES I buy it, but I have only seen Genesis's and PSX's recently.

yes, lots of time. i got my Sega Saturn for $4.99 (one of my best deals there), but i often see PS1/2, Gamecube and oXBOX at my thrift store. sometimes complete (accessories can be scattered at times).

If you count the goodwill computer store in Charlotte NC Ive bought lots of retro systems from Goodwill. We were on the way to be a dealer at Animazement, stop there and bought 10 NES's and 10 Dreamcasts with a smattering of games. And sold them all while there for a hefty profit...

Did they actually keep the Saturn with the video games or with the general electronics (VCRs, DVD players)?

Depends on the store. Some keep consoles in the display cabinets, some with electronics. Recently, all the Goodwills in my area got rid of their display cabinets so if they have anything it is mixed in with random stuff on the shelf. Sadly that means the bulk of their carts are now on Shopgoodwill.com, but eh thats the breaks. I will still ask someone who works there if they have games in the back, if dont look super busy.

with the general electronics. it was just out there waiting for me to snipe it like a Hawk.

Goodwill has a computer/electronics store here, GoodBytes. I bought my Tandy 1000TX, Tandy 2500SX/20, generic 486, TRS-80 Model IV with a pair of mini-disks, Vic-20, and probably more that I'm forgetting about. Everything worked except the 486 which had battery leakage. Still, replacing the motherboard and using the case and cards got me a working 486 for cheaper than I could get one on eBay.

There's always a few PSX, Genesis, and Dreamcast there. Rarely anything older than 16 bit.

The thrift store nearby test their stuff so I never had issues there. They even let me try the CRT tvs with my own console to do screen quality comparisons.

Ive bought alot of As IS/part repair Genesis and Snes over ebay and never had any console with anything more serious than a dirty connector. I may just have been lucky but it seems to me that those consoles are pretty reliable.
